thank you for your honest and oh so true review - I've been laughing for the last 5 minutes! Remember of course Beecham was asked about Stockhausen once. He replied he'd thought he'd stepped in some once...

Really is out of me have ears to understand Stockhausen's music I have in 16bits CDs. But some world famous musicians I like, studied with him, so I intend to feel to one like Stockhausen's works you have to be one with him or be a musician, or be a Glass, a Reich. Stockhausen is an architect of sounds, not a Mozart or a Irving Berlin. If he has great or little musical value I can not say, but I would like to know why.

One time in a Concert in Germany, Stockhausen came on stage with a broom, simply swept the stage and go away, and it was all the ''Concerto'', eventually the audience went away, have no complaints!
I think in this night Stockhausen show how is easy fool the critics and the general audience, or simply have nothing new to play...
I prefer Stimmung in a Strings/Winds arrangement than this Choral original version. Listen the samples on the vendors Sites before buy, if you like you can buy as the Harmonia Mundi recording in very excellent.

I still treasure my vinyl copy of the Collegium Vocale version of Stimmung, signed by Stockhausen, who always used to hang around on stage after concerts so fans could come and chat with him. And for years I considered the Collegium Vocale version to be definitive, especially when the Singcircle version was released, which I felt to be lacking in fluidity and spontaneity. But Hillier's Copenhagen version was a revelation. I was lucky enough to be seated within feet of the singers at a Proms performance at the Royal Albert Hall and was completely blown away - transported in fact back to the early 1970s and hearing this masterpiece for the first time. Their grasp of the essence of Stimmung was sparkling.

I am SO looking forward to listening to the SA-CD. I'll report back when I have.

In your review, you mention a "pop" between each track. This is caused by your player, not by the disc itself. On my Sony CE-595, the disc plays flawlessly (not that I listen to it other than to torture loved ones), but my BX-38 inserts a little pop between every track of any multichannel disc. So far, Sony has done nothing about this problem, although they are aware of it. Maybe it's not fixable via firmware update.

LOL. I sat thru the Lp of this piece. All of it.

Seriously though: His "Kontakt" (sp?) **screams** for the surround treatment, as it was originally conceived to be played through 4 speakers. For my tastes, I find the "electronic world" within pretty imaginative. Compelling even.

Varese's surround-sound "Poem Electronique" is another perfect candidate, even more harrowing than the Stockhausen IMHO and doesn't wear out its welcome.
