David Hurwitz gave an absolutely scathing review: http://www.classicstoday.com/review.asp?ReviewNum=11071

But, I see 2 of 2 have recommend it. Any comments or brief reviews?

Cheers,
Matt

No-one's replied yet, so I'll comment. BBC radio3 played a long extract of this recording and I must say I was impressed. David H has very strong opinions about RN's period practices, particularly the bowing.

Other listeners have commented on www.bbc.co.uk/radio3 messageboards.

Once again I will state that I have NO use for CLassics Today and Mr Hurwitz. I have this recording and while it does not blow me away like Norrington's Berlioz Requiem, I still love the performance. My only nit is that Norrington takes the last movement a wee bit on the brisk side...and that is my ONLY nit...

Cheers,

Hurwitz is a critic who can be taken at his word with positive reviews, but his highly critical reviews are nearly useless to most readers. He's got a few things he hates and he's not remotely rational or objective about them. Norrington is one of the items of his ire, ditto Simon Rattle. That's not to say he hasn't some good negative points, too... the characterlessness of the Berlin Philharmonic *is* pretty tedious, for example. Still... buy it if Hurwitz loves it, but ask a fair friend when he hates it, because it means nothing with him.
