At 13:53 on the first track, there is the kind of loud raspy sound you get when a CD is scratched on both the SACD stereo and CD layers -- my copy is not scratched. Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, certainly a noticeable raspy sound, interference?, though not louder than the music.

Do I want to wait to order this until a second round of pressings is available? Is it a big deal or something that passes quickly? A recording artifact such as one might expect of a truck passing by during the recording session (I know that would not be a RASPY noise) or something that was not on the master sent to the pressing plant? What do you guys think of the performance and sound otherwise? Review anyone?

I just listened to it with Jared Sacks in a multi-channel demo we did a couple of days ago in Beijing and thought it was pretty good. I personally dislike Wispelwey's playing (mannerism), but if you like him buy the disc it's worth it. The orchestra is fantastic anyway. And I think I remember it was a live recording, because Jared told me about how hard it was to set the microphones with the audience being too close.

Jared played the second movement, and then I asked for the third. But we unfortunately didn't listen to the first so I cannot tell about that noise you're talking about. If it's on the SACD and CD layers there's a chance that it is something on the recording.

I couldn´t hear this noise in the surround mix on my copy. Haven´t checked the stereo or cd layers. I wasn´t so pleased with the performance, found it very ordinary. Also I think the Symphonic Variations is a boring piece.

I emailed Channel Classics about it and Jared Sacks responded. He said the problem is not on his copy. Maybe it's a bad pressing then?

It's clearly an electronic artifact. If it is indeed a pressing problem and not on the master tape, and you wish to buy the recording, then I'd say wait until you know you can purchase an non-defective version with certainty.

Yeah, I'm not too thrilled with the performance. I'll need to listen to it a few more times before passing judgment, but nothing really jumped out at me on the first listen.

I think the Symphonic Variations is a pretty decent piece, though it's rarely played all that well. I think that people try too hard to make it sound Czech. Gardiner, of all people, has a good recording of it because it's completely unidiomatic. As one reviewer noted, he conducts it as if it were Elgar.

I haven´t heard the Gardiner, but it sounds interesting. In Fischers hands it sounds like Brahms through and through. Dull Brahms though.

......and his Elgar with the VPO sounds like Strauss, R. Quite the alchemist!

As far as the Dvorak is concerned, I wonder whether there have already been two pressings. To be honest the "fault" isn't serious, I just wish it wasn't there!

It's much more Brahms sounding.
