For the love of god, another Beethoven cycle? And no filler?

"Period" performance. Might be good, I don't know how Manze does Beethoven.

This could be good. I like the cover at least.

I thought it was a pint of beer under his arm until I put my glasses on.
It will be interesting to compare this one with the Alia Vox upcoming reissue of Savall's.

Well, we've argued about companies issuing what they can sell and try and make some money! Yes, there is a wide choice of Beethoven (and Mahler) out and on the horizon; however tempting they are, you don't have to buy them as I commented about Mahler 6 recordings ages ago. Did I promise to eat my hat if bought another?

Pass the mayonnaise, Doris............

sigh - and now, only a few days after your post we see what is probably the start of yet another with conductor Giovanni Antonini.

That said, I am glad to see Sony doing *something* with SACD. I just would certainly look at other repertoire (first), were I them. Also, isn't there some kind of relationship between HM and Sony? ... if so it becomes even more strange!

Just recently I saw a video clip on the Harmonia Mundi website where Andrew Manze was talking about this recording. The Helsingborg Orchestra looks to be playing on modern instruments and the orchestra looked like ti was MUCH bigger than say a period performance ensemble.

From the video clip, the performance sounds like it will be a good one!!

Cheers,

I just got Harmonia Mundi's sampler for new releases with some 6 minutes of the first movement, RBCD only, of course. Its fast and crisp, and it does sound if they are using period instruments - or at least Manze made orchestra sounding rather 'periodish'. I've heard Gardiner conducting Beethoven's 7th with London Symphony Orchestra and he managed to make them sound as if they were playing period instruments. Gardiner's Beethoven would be my closest comparison from what little I've heard.

The Helsingborg Symphony plays modern instruments at modern pitch but is sized more like a chamber orchestra.

The "filler" pieces are examples of Beethoven's additional use of the Eroica theme, The Finale from Prometheus & 12 Contradances.

Enjoy!

The theme appeared first in the "Prometheus."
