Mine is on order - these three Alia Vox CD/books are superb issues by all acounts. I recommend the first two most highly.

Beardawgs,

Thanks for the recommendation; I love Savall & Co. When you say, "Even if they might not be original compositions..." do you not mean that these indeed ARE Savall's original composition/arrangements?

From what I gathered from the book variations for Indian and Japanese instruments are improvisations on O Gloriosa Domina hymn. Everything else is of course composed and performed as is. Thinking of it, I seriously doubt that there are any music for those eastern instruments written down in any shape of form of western music from the period. That is probably the reason why the whole introduction about musical part of this release starts with the sentence that performance of early music is an educated guess. However they reached the final product, be it Savall alone or the musicians (probably mixture of both) they did an excellent job.

All 3 books are far more than just CDs or SACDs. It's amazing what one can learn from just reading them - my interest in Spanish history (and early music) is more than satisfied. And that applies to complete Alia Vox catalogue. I even got my copy of Don Quixote signed by the man himself when I met him last spring in London. I was full of praise for the book and music, he didn't say anything, just looked at me with a cheeky smile as if I was stating the obvious. He knows what he's doing.

Fantastic story! I do love the Don Quixote set - potential listeners should not be put off by the fact there are some readings.

Quite the opposite - for me that is the attraction of the set. Even if my Spanish is very limited, the readings are so well done and fit the musical part perfectly! My Spanish friend told me that the actor who is reading the excerpts is the Spanish equivalent of Lawrence Olivier, hardly surprising in such a high level of production. And even if you don't understand what he's talking about you can get a very clear idea of what is going on just from the nuances in his interpretation. They really got the speech and the music to the same level of expression.
Btw Peter, did you notice how much music by Morales is featured in all 3 sets? I'm just hoping we won't have to wait long for an all Morales disc from Savall... maybe if we write him a letter and ask nicely...

Nesh

Bought it in Berkeley at a great place called "The Musical Offering", for better price than what's advertised here online. Selection is very good for classical recordings and they have very helpful customer service. They have plenty of recordings by Savall. It's hard to find a place like this anymore. Check them out online www.themusicaloffering.com

The CD box is a great idea. Only issue I found is that when I play it on Windows Media Player, the metadata only comes up in Japanese... Hopefully it's just a shortcoming of Microsoft.

Savall is the prominent period music researcher and performer of our times.

Blame whatever database Microsoft uses (I believe it's Gracenote). The databases (Gracenote and FreeDB both) are in part user submitted so it's a matter often times of who does it first. It can lead to oddness -- on the FreeDB the BIS St. Mathew Passion has like disc 1 in Japanese, and the other two in English but with different formats...it's annoying.
