Hi everyone,

I recently visited OPPO's U.S. headquarters in Mountain View, CA and learned of the following facts about the much anticipated new player:

* The video chip is high quality ABT, better than Farouja
* While audio quality is improved due to better housing and construction of the power supply and board, there will be no option for DSD direct, only DSD converted to PCM
* no USB port
* black shell
* estimated price is $300-350
* release date is possibly Feb. 2008 but most likely March due to extensive
testing

I don't work for OPPO so the above information could change at any time prior to release date.

I have provided Jason and Derek, two of OPPO's employees, with the following suggestions for future releases:

* headphone port for direct listening when receiver/speakers aren't available
* improved interface when plugging in USB devices, especially iPods (folder hierarchy is virtually impossible to find desired files, no plans to collaborate with Steve Jobs anytime soon, lol)
* multi-disc player (carousel, magazine)
* display artist/track info on player, not just TV

That's all I can think of for now. As always, your feedback is encouraged and welcomed.

Cheers,

Dan

According to beta testers, posting on AVSForum.com, of Oppo DV-983 it is not yet determined whether or not DSD over HDMI will be available. DSD converted to PCM over HDMI will be supported.

The DV-983 will handle various cadences (like for PAL) much better than DV-980.

Well I would assume that the employees at OPPO have precedence over beta testers at AVSForum.com Sigfred, lol.

Jason, who works for OPPO, has confirmed that DSD direct will not be an option.

It was my hope that DSD over HDMI would be included since at least a couple of weeks ago it appeared to still not been decided as a feature to include. A pity, though.

I likely would have bought the DV-980 if it could de-interlace PAL material, so I will settle for the DV-983.

Edit: "no USB port": no USB connection at all or just one in the back?

If we're going to give suggestions to Oppo may I suggest to them looking into making an affordable AV Receiver to match their universal players (of course with DSD input via HDMI)?

The other suggestion I'd like to add (but I'm sure they'll be thinkg about that themselves) is making a BD player with SACD and DVD-A support.

One of the very nice things that Oppo offers is DSD converted to PCM transported over HDMI. This means that that a HDMI 1.1 receiver can be used. Not many players offers this.

One feature, that some consider a bug, is that on DV-980 it is possible to level adjust PCM when playing SACD. This is nice to have in case bass management is used in the receiver and the receiver handles .1 incorrectly (ie boost .1 incorrectly). Btw, Denon players can do bass/level management DVD-A over HDMI, so this is not unheard of.

PlayStation3 does.

Annoyingly it's not an option -- it's the only way thus far.

Hi everyone,

For those who are interested, I just came across this page:

http://oppodigital.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DV983H

And here is a review:

http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cd-dvd-player-product-reviews/dvd-players/oppo-digital-dv-983h-dvd-player---a-secrets-dvd-benchmark-review.html

Just to confirm what I mentioned in the first post, here is an excerpt from the review:

The 983H is also a true universal DVD player, offering DVD-Audio and SACD playback via HDMI (v1.2) or analog outputs. The 983 does not offer a pure DSD output though for SACD. The custom Mediatek decoder does not offer this output. The DSD signal is converted to PCM (not really a problem because just about every player does this).

Cheers,

Dan

It's not really a problem because "just about every player does it"?

I fail to see the logic in this.
