Not directly related to the 983 but can you find out if their Blu-Ray models will also include SACD playback?

Thanks

John

John,

I will do that, yes, but be aware that the supposed Blu-Ray player by Oppo slated for an April 2009 release is currently only an Internet rumor; they did purchase a license for research purposes, but according to a rep, they have no plans to release such a model.

I will confirm that quote tomorrow and if they tell me different, I will milk as much info from them as I can regarding their plans :)

Cheers,

Dan

Hi everyone,

So I spent an hour with OPPO today, speaking at great length with Nathan, who's very knowledgeable of not only his company's products, but other company products as well.

In short, he had this to say:

- If you own a 980, you should keep the 980 and not trade it in for a 983 as the differences are so slight, unless you have the extra $230 to blow at any given moment without flinching, you won't gain that much improvement, video-wise or audio-wise (I'm convinced by this statement after viewing parts of "Fifth Element" on the 980 and 983 - there is a noticeable difference, but with some changes to your settings, it is not that significant - Nathan also feels that in general, although he does not claim to be an audiophile, the difference between DSD direct and PCM goes unnoticed by not only himself but nearly all of his colleagues and customers as well)

- The best Blu-Ray player for your money today is the PS3: faster loading, quality and design, reliability and compatibility between Blu-Ray, SACD (for those who own the older generation models as the new ones scrapped the SACD playback) and of course, gaming.

- OPPO officially will release an absolute all-in-one device (Blu-Ray, SACD, DVD-Audio, DivX, etc) but not until they are happy with it. December of this year IS possible, but not likely. There was a long wait for the 983, so expect as much from this as well.

Hope this helps some of you. Have a great weekend!

Cheers,

Dan

Final Take
Despite is modest appearance, the DV-983H is a power house of a DVD player. First off, it is easy to set up and use. Second, its video/audio performance is excellent. Also, the inclusion of the Anchor Bay VRS processing system is a real bonus.

Using HDMI with the 720p, 1080i, and 1080p output settings in conjunction with a Westinghouse Digital LVM-37w3 1080p LCD Monitor, and using the Silicon Optix HQV Benchmark DVD as a reference, the DV-983H produced excellent results in terms of detail, color, video noise reduction, moire pattern detection and elimination, and frame cadence detection. The video quality also bore out in real world DVD playback as well, using several titles, including (but not limited to): Crank, Moulin Rouge, House of the Flying Daggers, and Serenity.

Audio performance of the DV-983H was also excellent. Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound options worked well, with excellent imaging. CD, DVD-Audio, and SACD playback audio reproduction was solid. I did not sense any shortcomings that could be attributed to the DV-983H. NOTE: DVD-Audio and SACD playback can be accessed by either the 5.1 Channel analog or HDMI outputs (provided you have an AV receiver with HDMI 1.2 input capability).

OPPO has succeeded in delivering a true reference-quality DVD player. However, the price point is high, the location of the USB port on the rear panel, instead of the front of the unit, did make using that feature inconvenient, and the conversion of SACD-DSD to PCM may put off some audiophiles.

However, taking everything into consideration, these drawbacks are minor. If you are reluctant to jump into true-HD with Blu-ray, you can still get the best video and audio quality that standard DVD can deliver with the almost-perfect DV-983H.

Based on its performance, the OPPO Digital DV-983H deserves a 5 Star rating.

If this machine gives us DSD output on SACD, full Blu Ray sound format compatiblity, wireless networked capability, and will be available in the UK , then it will be a serious piece of kit well worth consideration!
