Has anyone else noticed sonic "artifacts" in the SACD stereo layer? In particular, I hear weird cracks and pops in "Shelter from the Storm." I've listened on three SACD players, two Sonys and one Oppo, and the noise is there on all three so I doubt it is player-related.

This would indicate that its just your copy.Check for hairline scratches on both top and bottom of the disc for damage at the approriate distance from the centre.Dave

I have that SACD and I listen to the mulichannel layer often, but never the stereo layer. I will check it out and let you know what I find. I have the Oppo DV-980H and Denon DVD-1920 to try.

The cracks and pops are there, my disc is mint, so it is not a physical imperfection with the disc. I played the stereo layer using a Samsung DVD-HD950 and won't bother to check it on others. I don't know whether it is part of the source or just an issue with this SACD. That is an unfortunate minor issue with an otherwise great album and great SACD.

I think it is part of the source material rather than it being a problem with the SACD. For instance, when I play the redbook CD from 2003, I can hear the cracks/pops but less audibly than on the SACD. I guess the higher resolution of the SACD highlights any imperfections.

That said, I don't think the cracks/pops spoil the track in any way. In fact, if anything they seem to add to the rustic feel of the song for me. It's my favourite song on the album.
