I have been using an SPL (Sound Pressure Level) meter since I bought my SA-CD player and I swear by it. How many here are using a meter to tweak their Surround System for the best performance?

I have used an SPL meter and it helped me to fine tune my system but I found my set-up was fairly close just by using my ears.

I use one, and also the Pentatone setup tracks, which are excellent, especially the sub-bass tracks which use an ingenious system of beats from near-pitch tones. Also useful for checking the phase of the sub speaker.

Hi,

Yes, I'm also using an SPL meter and I usually set the rear channels about 2dB lower than the main channels. Just seems to work well that way.

There did you get those Pentatone setup tracks?

Pentatone set-up tracks are on Stay in Tune with PentaTone

Same for me. I got better-sounding results using the audible subwoofer calibration than my SPL meter and that is likely due to room modes affecting measurements.

I always used an SPL meter and the Pentatone set up disc until now as Audyssey now balances all channels as well as equalising the speakers for the room. MC sounds great and is always my preferred listening inlieu of stereo.

i also used Audessy on my Denon 3808, but had to resort to the SPL meter when calibrated the analogs out from my Denon SACD.
