Blu Ray will go nowhere as a hi-rez audio only carrier. History is crowded with examples that show that the larger market favors convenience, portability and price over quality every time. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is that they've been listening to lo-fi music for so long, they have no idea what their missing. And even if they did, they probably wouldn't care. The generation of consumers that will download all their music and never buy a compact disc or LP, is already on the planet. As they grow up, music delivery as we know it, will disappear.

I am more optimistic. I belive, that as storage becomes ever cheaper, and transport (broadband internet) speeds become over faster, convenienve and quality will be combined. Just that now, the "on-line" infrastructure can only easily accommodate compressed data.

In fact, we are already witnessign the genesis of this amongst audiophiles such as myself and others, who are choosing to rip music in relatively high-res formats anc ompression rates.

We can get 1TB hard drives for under UK£100. That's the equivalent of at least 100 SACD's, or 1000 redbook CD's UNCOMPRESSED.

So hang in there, bro, a new dawn is emerging, and it's high-res.

I’m unaware of if it is possible to handle Blu-ray discs as you do with CD and SACD, like insert and play.

You can set players to "auto-start" - a facility that may be utilised to kick-start audio Blu Ray players. Although, like others, I do not believe that Blu Rays are a future mass-market audio carrier any more than DVD's were. See my last post in this thread for my take on the high-res audio future!

I agree hi-rez downloads will be a real, indeed the only, option for those who want hi-rez music in the not too distant future. Linn Records, for one, already has a great site for this. My main point was that blu ray as a music only, hi-rez carrier will go nowhere.

You called yourself crazy and you have no MiniDisc recorder or DCC recorder? LOL (I just purchased a refurbished MD component recorder directly from Sony)

Don't forget Denon....it's the only company publicly stating it's looking to introduce a BD/SACD/CD player. However, with the sale of D&M Holdings (parent company to Denon, Marantz, McIntosh, Boston Acoustcis, Snell, etc.)....

I saw the Denon Blu-Ray SACD DVDAudio player online and it is only $900.00.
LOL I would like to get down to only one player but I don't think the cost will let me. I have one for SACD's, one for DVD Audio and one for HD DVD. Guess I'll just wait to get Blu-
ray till they are real cheap like the HD DVD was when I got it for $129.00.

You did? Please enlighten us and post a link to where you saw it.

Tough luck. There hasn't been any device in the past that plays HD-DVDs as well as SACD and DVD-A and it's extremely unlikely there ever will be now. Not even from Oppo.

I would agree with you, but the record companies already know for popular releases they won't be looking into a music only hi-rez carrier, and THAT is good news for people just looking for hi-rez.

Imagine SonyBMG/EPIC release a Blu-ray version of Pearl Jam's "Ten" album with multi-channel high resolution surround and stereo 24/96 PCM, in addition to making of featurettes, album videos (in HD where possible), clips from unplugged 1992, interview archive from 1992/1993, live performances previously unreleased, etc., digital CD copy of album

I believe it will go where no hi-rez carrier has gone before.
