Hello, I just purchased the DENON AVR-2808CI over the weekend ($468! at many websites) and the manual claims it supports SACD DSD over the HDMI. This will be nice when I go "that way", but the SACD regular playback in PURE DIRECT MODE kicks royal ass. The discs I've played thus far ("Avalon", "Brothers In Arms", "DSOTM") are as if I was hearing them for the first time. No tech talk from me, sorry. Thank you.

The 2808CI handles SACD over HDMI but also handles DSD to analog natively - it only does this in PURE DIRECT and DIRECT mode.

Very nice receiver and great price, well done.

I found a statement that the Pioneer DV-48 (DV-600-AV-S) is a better buy than Oppo DV-980H, link: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/archive/index.php/t-1063874.html, when the criteria is to use the players for transport only. The point is that the price is lower and that the pioneer can play all the disc that the Oppo can, except decoding HDCD. What do you think about that statement?

The 980H does NTSC>PAL and PAL>NTSC conversions on the fly.
I don't know if the Pioneer does.

Hello, I was intrigued that the 2808 does DSD natively via PURE DIRECT or DIRECT. I can't see the DSD icon on the receiver during PURE DIRECT playback with the front display off. I'll try DIRECT tonight and hope to see the DSD icon. Icon or not, this sounds phenomenal. Thanks

If the front display is off, you shouldn't see anything.
=D

I am not going to use the players to show video only advanced audio, so the NTSC&PAL switch feature is of no importance to me. But thanx for the input!

Folks,

Whilst all this has been really informative, I think as audiophiles, wouldn't you rather have DSD played through an amplifier (either integrated or pre-power combo) to really get the punch out of DSD audio as against an AV receiver for pure 2-channel bliss?

Any idea of which amps accept and play DSD audio?

What you call an "amplifier" would be analogue, accepting only analogue signals. Any amp that accepts a digital signal, including DSD, is either a receiver (integrated pre+power) or a processor.

Yeah, Thaks for repeating what I already said. With the PURE DIRECT off, there is no DSD icon shown. I'll take the great sound over seeing the icon. Have a good one.

Really? I think:

Amp = pre/power combo.
Receiver = amp+radio tuner.
Processor = takes an encoded (digital) signal and decodes and if necessary, converts to analogue

Some more questions for the experts:

a) SACD has to be played in digital format (prefrably non-PCM) through an AV receiver & not an analogue amplifier to hear the DSD audio. True or False?

b) Can DSD be experienced from analogue outputs at all? Or does the output have to necessarily come from the HDMI?

c) Is it true that the Oppo DV 980H has a preset SACD setting for multichannel only, which can't be changed? So if a single layer stereo SACD is played, how will the output be impacted?

Thanks
