Just a couple of points to add to wehecht's review. I too enjoyed it very much. I hadn't heard of Fabio Capitanucci but Norah Amsellem has sung Violetta and Micaela (very nicely although she seemed not fully involved dramatically) at Covent Garden. Marcus Haddock has sung Don Jose at Glyndebourne and has recorded Werther for Naxos.

I stupidly bought the RBCD believing that Telarc weren't issuing an SACD. As they haven't with the recent Beethoven piano concertos. I am glad to say that the SACD is streets ahead of the RBCD. For me the voices are occasionally just a bit too far in front of the orchestra but there is plenty of well judged staging perspective.

Perhaps with TEAC issuing old Decca recordings we may get some of the great opera recordings of the past.

I have just heard this recording and to say that it is very enjoyable, is for me, something of an understatement.

Maybe there are no "great" soloists here. But everyone does her/his part commendably and the orchestra is splendid so YES! I too REALLY enjoyed this.

Particularly of note here is the fact that opera is not my favorite, not even my second or third favorite "genre" within classical music. But I really did enjoy this immensely! I heartily recommend it to all.

The remastered,Karajan/BPO/Pavarotti/Freni, "La Boheme", has recently been released by Decca. It is a great recording of an incredible performance. Don't pass it up just because its not SACD.

I think that's the key to this performance: It's a performance that can easily draw listeners in, even if they're not into Opera. I much prefer the old Beacham, the Karajan, and I really like the Leinsdorf on SACD. This one is exquisitely engineered, the performers are mostly fine, but there were times I thought I might be listening to a Broadway update. If you are not a fan of opera, you might like this. If you already have good performances, you might want this one to simply show how much a well produced, well recorded SACD can draw you in. I intend to keep it and come back to it from time to time. Like Windsurfer, I recommend it.
