I find CD to be a complete waste of time! I think you are sabotaging your 2 channel SACD playback. First off forget about ANYTHING digital in the receiver, ANALOG IN AND OUT ONLY!....

Hi,

I like the purity of your amplification; a quick question though - where's the DAC occurring? At Yamaha I presume because I didn't see any digital inputs on the AMC. So is Yamaha sending DSD through analogue then? Is this possible?

Please clarify:

a) On one hand the Yamaha DAC is at 192KHz whereas the AMC is rated at 80KHz. So is there a loss of frequency response then?

b) Where are you getting to hear DSD then? I suppose the Yamaha is converting to PCM...isn't it?

Thanks.

a)192kHz is the maximum sampling rate of the digital signals the Yamaha DAC can handle, not the frequency response. The AMC's 80KHz is what they say is its analog frequency response. One has little to do with the other, especially since no commonly available speakers respond that high up nor do your ears.

b)You cannot hear DSD or PCM; you can only hear analog. Some argue that a direct DSD-analog conversion is superior to a DSD-PCM-analog conversion and logic suggests this is so. In practice, there are other variables which may cloud the issues, so I will not offer an answer.

The conversion happens in the Yamaha Universal player the DSD is converted to analog and routed to the AMC pre-amp. When Yamaha changed manufacturers with this series the 1700 and the 2700 DO NOT convert DSD to PCM.

Yamaha says that SACD has a frequency response of over 100kHz but they do not give +/- ranges which leads me to believe that like most modern SACD players there is a low pass analog filter at 50kHz with a very slow roll off as some amps have trouble handling the ultrasonics above 50kHz.

The 192kHz DAC is for the PCM sources: DVD Audio and upsampling of CD. That is the sampling frequency. The frequency response at 192kHz is actually 2-88kHz.

The limiting factor in my system is my speakers which are down -3dB at 45kHz.
