Is there anyone creating more interesting "classical" music releases in hi-rez sound, than Jordi Savall?

In view of what’s going on in the Middle East as I write, this release couldn't come at a more appropriate time. It examines in seven chapters, the history of Jerusalem (city of two peaces) through the music of the cultures and religions that have inhabited it. The central chapters are the first three: "The Jewish City", "The Christian City" and "The Arab & Ottoman City". The Fourth is devoted to Jerusalem as a "city of pilgrimage", the fifth, to Jerusalem as a "land of refuge and exile", and the sixth & seventh, as the city of "two peaces"; the "city of heavenly peace" and the "city of earthly peace".

The use of ancient instruments are included by Jewish, Christian and Muslim musicians from Israel, Palestine, Greece, Syria, Armenia, Turkey, England, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, together with Hespèrion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya, to portray the fortunes of Jerusalem through the centuries, to reveal a city that looks forward to the possibility of achieving the two peaces proclaimed in its name.

If Savall's past creativity and inspiration, and the quality of Alia Vox's SACD catalog, are any indication, this should be an incredibly moving, timely and poignant release. As does the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, art once again points the way for humanity. This time, will enough people listen to make a difference?

I haven't had time yet to open my own copy of this sumptuous production (no, I'm not cover* for Alia Vox), but discovered this review this morning:

I haven't made the purchase yet. I'd be most interested in your opinion once you've had a chance to listen. One question: What does, "*=sock puppet in USA?" mean?

It means "cover" in the UK. "cover" = "sock puppet", so I'm told.

i.e. I'm not masquerading as someone disconnected from Alia Vox. There's a clumsy sentence. I'm not under cover here pretending to be independent of Alia Vox.

However, I do think their products are fantastic!

Indeed they are (see below citation). I ordered

La Folia - Hesperion XXI/Savall
Purcell: Fantasias for the viols, 1680 - Savall
Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine - Savall
Marais: Suite d'un Goût Etranger - Savall

today from Prestoclassical.co.uk at 30% off.

The many new and outstanding SACDs releases, reason enough to rejoice, will be suplimented, as Mr. Savall has retrieved for Alia Vox much of the Astrée-Auvidis catalogue that he recorded from the mid-70s to the late 90s, for SACD remastering and release, including, Marais "Pièces de violes, Books 1-5".

Why so many splendid releases? Artistic vision first, commerce, second.

Last January, Savall was awarded the prize for best early Music recording of 2007 at MIDEM, the record industry’s annual trade fair in Cannes. In his acceptance speech Savall defended the position of his record label Alia Vox, this year celebrating its tenth anniversary, whose ethical and aesthetic bottom line is to produce CDs of high musical quality and profound content which also have an optimum outward appearance. They view the CD as a cultural object which offers something more than beautiful music that is well-performed, thereby surpassing the apparent limitations of record albums. Alia Vox sees this as the best way of preventing the demise of the CD, currently under threat from what has come to be known as the “digital revolution”.
Jordi Savall also defended the role of creativeness in the context of independent production, arguing in favor of independent production as the only means whereby musicians can pursue their true artistic ambitions: “When you work for a big record label you are not free to do what you want. You have to submit projects that will make money. With our own record label we can do what we like without thinking about the financial results”, said Savall.

My copy of this album has problems with disk 1. Playing the mch tracks, starting with #10, I get many dropouts and eventually my player just quits. I tried cleaning the disk (in several ways) with no improvement. No problems with disk 2. Does anyone else have this problem?

I thought the same of two discs in my own collection then later found that it was the player that was at fault.

I have this sacd, I like it, so I went tonite to the Sydney Opera House to hear Savall and Hysperion perform it. All I can say is that it was a terribly poor and amateurish concert. The main problem was that they AMPLIFIED all the instruments and all the singers, and then passed them through a MIX and added reverb and rubbish, and played it back to the Opera House audience through multiple speakers. I thought I had booked for a serious classical music concert in the fairly intimate space of the Opera Theatre of the Opera House. Instead we got this tacky spectacle --- the type of thing you get at a tourist hotel at the pyramids. The lighting was like a school musical. So bad. Savall looked totally bored. Like dulled out of his existence. Maybe he is past it. Maybe he needs the money??? When you lose your integrity, it's over.

I have lots of their sacds.. Normally going to a concert inspires one to buy more, but this was just a big turn off. We left at interval. Would have gone earlier if doing so did not mean being rude to other concert goers.

If I wanted to hear amplified fake sounds, I would have just stayed at home -------- the sound quality on sacd would have been more natural.
