Hello all

What do you think of this "universal" player (Blu-Ray, DVD-A, SACD, CD) ?

Do we know the release date in USA ?

Does OPPO give some news about this player and finally is there beta-testers of the BDP-83 ?

Apologize about my bad english.

Regards - Dominique.

its being reported on the AVS Forum website that there is a 'beta' program for this for later this month or in january with an estimated retail price of 499. What is not in this initial version is BD profile 2.0 nor decoding of the advanced codecs, but that is apparently in the works and will be available when the general release occurs.

Nor is there, yet, DVD-A.

Are there any valid reasons we should be concerned about that?

Elsewhere I relayed on this forum, (perhaps more than once), the fact that I asked a young recording engineer what differences he found between high resolution PCM and DSD. I mention that he is young, because that tells me he has much better hearing than I, a 68 yr old veteran of the Hi-Fi wars. He is a recent graduate of the Cleveland Institute and took a major in recording and a minor in cello performance.

He works for a studio that records both in high resolution PCM and in DSD. He said that at first he believed PCM had "more detail" and more "sparkle". He next said that then he began to notice that the PCM had more "detail" and "sparkle" than the live feed! He finished by saying that he feels that DSD is much closer to the live sound.

The only reason I am concerned is that, in addition to the ~2000 SACDs I have, I also have about 50 DVD-As, some of which I am quite fond of and are irreplaceable in other formats.

As for the differences, they are, imho, inconsequential as they are small and readily swamped by the wider variation in recording, mixing and mastering skills and attention applied to them. The only reason I greatly prefer SACD is the repertoire.

You can register on the Oppo web site to receive updates on this unit. I received the following email from Oppo on 12/10.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Disc Player Update

Thank you for signing up to receive information about our upcoming OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. We appreciate your interest, and would like to update you on the current development status of this exciting new product.

One of the major design goals for the BDP-83 is to deliver first-class video quality for both Blu-ray and DVD. We based and expanded upon our top-of-the-line DV-983H up-converting DVD player and fully utilize the unparalleled performance of the VRS by Anchor Bay video processing solution. You can expect all the high-end video features including Source Direct for DVD and Blu-ray, high definition HDMI scaling, Edge and Detail Enhancement options, and 1080p24Hz output for both Blu-ray and DVD.

We did not stop at just video performance. We further refined the audio stage, including the addition of discrete stereo outputs and increasing the power and efficiency of the power supply. For SACD playback, the BDP-83 supports direct DSD over HDMI and DSD-to-analog without any PCM conversion, a very unique feature.

With the BDP-83, we intend to release a full-featured universal Blu-ray Disc player that supports BD Profile 2.0 (BD-Live), DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio. As of this writing, the BDP-83 supports BD Profile 1.1 (BONUSVIEW), DVD-Video, SACD, and bitstreaming of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Progress is being made on a daily basis as our engineers work diligently around the clock to further enable DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio onboard decoding, and BD Profile 2.0.

The BDP-83 is currently undergoing an extensive and thorough Beta Test Program. We greatly appreciate all the feedback from our beta testers, as without their hard work and extraordinary attention to detail, the BDP-83 would not be the high quality product that our customers have come to expect from us.

As many of our customers eagerly anticipate the release of the BDP83, we are contemplating a "BDP-83 Early Adoption Program" in late December or early January. This program will make available a limited number of units so you can purchase and experience the current implementation of the BDP-83's feature set, with the ability to download firmware as new features become available. The estimated price for the BDP-83 is around $499 to $599.

OPPO Digital is a consumer-oriented company that listens carefully to customer opinions and values their feedback. If it were not for our customers' feedback and support, OPPO would not be where we are today. At OPPO we strive to provide our customers with quality products reinforced by exceptional customer service.

Please email to BDP-83@oppodigital.com if you have any questions and comments, or simply reply to this email.
Best Regards,

Customer Service

Finally, a Profile 2.0 player with SACD (DSD thru HDMI) and DVD-Audio and able to pass Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio. For a second system, this is a godsend. As OPPO is not usually discounted, I am sure they will deliver quite a bang for the buck in these stressed-out economic times.....Sign me up!

I'm planning on this new player as well since I need to get a blu-ray player for HD movies. Love the SACD and DVD-Audio and I'm very pleased this is coming out.

Unfortunately, this is a US only release, and no plans for an equivalent Euro model, therefore, I will not be able to replace my PS3 as the de-facto high-def source in my AV rig. Boo hoo.

What I've read, is that the unit DOES support DVD-A and that the final list price will be between $499 and $599.00. It will also support DSD thru HDMI and will not convert DSD to PCM in the process. Whether it supports HDCD as do all previous OPPOs is still a mystery. The unit also appears to be "beefier" than all previous Oppos. And to the poster who decries the merits of DVD-A, the engineer who mastered both the DVD-A and SACD of BROTHERS IN ARMS said he preferred the DVD-A over the SACD. And to my ears, DXD should be the defacto recording medium for ALL future SACDs (as the specialty label 2L's exceptional DXD/SACD recordings attest to).
