Reading an interview given the late Jimmy Lock mentions that Decca was recording in multi-channel in the early 70s. Like the Philips recordings these were never issued as multi-channel LP. The recordings included the Dorati Haydn symphonies, the Solti Tannhauser and the Karajan Butterfly. As they are from the same stable as the Philips is there any chance of SACD versions?

The response to my e-mail to www.dorati.com, the official homepage of Antal Dorati, is that none of the Dorati/Philharmonia Hungarica Haydn symphonies were quad recordings. Grab Decca's limited edition 33 cd set (about $65USD with shipping & foreign transaction fee, from Crotchet.co.uk) while you can.

News that EMI might be considered -- and available to PentaTone -- is wonderful indeed.

In the category of rare, and superb, American repertoire I would strongly recommend any of the Abravanel Utah Symphony recordings made in the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. Long out of print as SQ Quad LPs, these include spectacular 4-channel recordings of Randall Thompson's Testament of Freedom and his Symphony No. 1 for Organ and Orchestra; and Roy Harris's "Folksong" Symphony No. 4.

There are a number of other unique goodies in the Angel/EMI vaults that should be given careful consideration if the opportunity arises.

If Richard Goode's contract with Nonesuch isn't exclusive, why doesn't Pentatone try to sign him? I've heard him in concert on several occasions, own many of his recordings (the Beethoven piano sonatas are particularly fine, as is his Bach), and have met and talked with him twice. He's well read, cultured, has a quiet, deep intelligence, and is a splendid musician, all of which informs every note he plays.

I guess Jimmy Lock didn't remember it correctly. However, great news from Pentaman. Anything from Decca or EMI will be gratefully received particularly operas.

They both have great back catalogs, especially operas. Let's hope there are many quad recordings and that Pentatone will gain access to them.

Is Pentatone planning to eventually release all the Dvorak symphonies conducted by Kreizberg on SACD? Thanks.

No.

Well, how about his 5th? Or, is this the end of the line for the Dvorak series? I'm looking forward to the 7th due to be released soon.

I like listening to the early Dvorak symphonies in my automobile on the way in to work in the morning. I have Kertesz' LSO RBCDs.

The 5th certainly deserves to be included in the series. I would vote also for the 4th but realize that my personal attraction to it may not be universally shared. The 5th though, is in a different ballpark.

Yes ... I like the 4th as well. I vote for both.
