I'm investigating the possibilities of capturing my SACD collection to FLAC 5.1 for archiving purposes.
I've been looking at the M-Audio Delta 1010 LT PCI card that has a 8 channel in capability. (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta1010LT.html).
Does anyone have experience with the concept?

Of course, that means you are going through an D/A/D conversion. There are a few ways to get 3xS/PDIF out and a few ways to record that. Of course, it is probably much more complex to do.

We are doing SACD 2-channel and multi-channel transfers for numerous labels now. They are mainly wanting files for their clients to download. Most of these files are 88.2, but most want DSD files to archive.
There is a way to get the DSD stereo and multi-channel information from an SACD, but prohibitively expensive for most consumers.

Bruce

I found this post on the quadraphonicquad forum on Recording Quad to the Desktop PC - What do you use?

Bruce of DSD_Mastering: I'm very curious, how do you get the DSD info out? It's supposed to be crypto-protected?...

A EMM CDSD transport optically coupled to a Sonoma DAW, that is in turn connected to a EMM DAC8 or DAC6 for playing out of the Sonoma computer. There is other hardware that can do the same I understand, but since the Sonoma and all of EMM's hardware use the same ST optical cable interface, and propritary data format, it's a very elegant clean way to rip the .dff files contained on an SACD.

The copy protection inherent in a SACD has much more to do with the propritary manufacturing technique of stamping the disk than the data contained on it. The file format before authoring is .dff, which is what you get out when the disk is read, and can be stored and edited exactly as it could be before it was authored to the SACD. There is lots of hardware available for recording, managing and playing .dff files.

Compared to a Rockport turntable, this is dirt cheap!

This is correct. We use the Playback Designs MPS-5 and the EMM Labs CDSD-SE transports, EMM Labs ADC8IV and DAC8IV converters and a Pyramix DSD/DXD mastering system. The Sonoma system can be used as well.
We use this for all our DSD transfers. We also use the Digital Audio Denmark AX24 converter as well.

Regards,

As long as you've invested in all those toys, you should look at a Sonoma card. It's a much cleaner way of capturing the CDSD data, without using your DAC8 to convert to wire, then on to your Pyrimix, and it'll coexist on the same motherboard as your Pyrimix card(s)

We've thought about that, but unfortunately the Sonoma is DSD only. We need a PCM stream too. We didn't want to have to do real time twice!

Did you have any luck capturing SACD's to FLAC 5.1 in a reasonably affordable way ?
