Dear Jared.

Yes, you are biased and you sound like Robert do when he discusses his own recordings.
You mention the "organ" sound in the finale as something you haven't heard before and maybe the reason for this is that it is not what Mahler wanted. Surely some conductor or other would have played it that way during the symphony's long history.

Today I read David Gutman's review in Gramophone and was relieved to see that I am not alone in finding Fischer's approach to hung up on details. He finishes his review with a question: "Is Mahler's emotive force blunted by Fischer's careful manicure?" My answer is yes. Because in Fischer's music making I can't see the forest for the trees.

Regards,
Thomas Roth

I congratulate Edvin for being willing to state his feelings--- as he usually is. I think most of us see Gutman's review a bit more positively, especially for Gramophone. And most of us who have heard this recording seem to be telling lots of others about it. Something must work, because I can't remember another Mahler 4 getting this much positive discussion. I am not willing to say that anyone should like this recording as much as I do, I am just saying that this performance puts my other ten recordings in the shade.

This quote from Ivan Fischer:

“There is a unique purity and transparency in Mahler’s 4th Symphony. The enchanting slay bells take us to his inner child, to his dreams of angels, fairy tales, angst and pure, divine love."

Slay bells? Sounds ominous. Perhaps that's how he got to heaven.

Indeed with the text from Ivan, this mistake slipped through. Maybe it was meant to be!

I just found this website after doing a Google search on Mahler 6/Fischer/SACD. The reason? I just yesterday received my order from Amazon.com for the Mahler Symphony 6 on Channel Classics, and was disappointed to discover that I was sent the regular CD version (ie. not the hybrid SACD). I had previously purchased the Channel Classics Symphony 2, and was delighted with it. I was not even aware that this recording was available as a normal CD. What is the purpose of it, given that the SACD is a hybrid disk? I then did a check search on Amazon, and could not find the SACD version at all. Admittedly, the recording is listed on Amazon as a 'CD', so I guess I need to take more care in future, but I thought I'd post this as a caution to others buying on-line....never assume anything, and check the details before hitting the 'Buy Now' button! By the way...I've played the disk, and like the Mahler 2, it's a stunning recording....lots of air around the players and a palpable sense of being in the space. I've never heard so much detail in the score. Despite not being the SACD version, it would probably be the best-recorded version of the work in my collection (and I have many!) As far as the performance is concerned, I'm perlexed by the luke-warm review it received from David Gutman in the Gramophone magazine, who described it as 'light-weight'......not an opinion I could endorse.

Are you referring to Symphony #6 or Symphony #4 where you mention Gutman's review?

If it is No.4 then the number should be CCS SA 26109.

If you have CCSSA it is a hybrid SACD, or a pirated fake, something amazon.com wouldn't sell.

Did you buy from amazon itself or an amazon seller?

AFAIK, Channnel Classics is single-inventory and makes hybrid SACDs and no CDs of the SACD releases.

The mahler 6th was the last time I did double inventory. (if the numbers end in '98', then it was a pcm version. all sacd end in the year that it comes out.
Mahler 4 is only in SACD. Sorry that this has happened.
