Now here's an eBay offer that's got me totally confused:

I'm aware there are three SACD editions of 'Toto IV':
1. Toto: Toto IV (single layer, stereo)
2. Toto: Toto IV (hybrid, stereo)
3. Toto: Toto IV (hybrid, stereo/multichannel)

In this case the seller claims it's a US Hybrid SACD 5.1

The sticker however suggests it's a single layer stereo/multichannel SACD.

To add to the confusion, the inlay booklet shows a CDDA logo!

Now it seems that that same logo mistake was made with the single layer stereo edition too. Perhaps they (unintentionally?) made a facsimile copy of the original CD artwork.

And perhaps the sticker (or the whole jewel case including the sticker) was originally on another SACD?

The second link you posted, Toto: Toto IV is actually single-layer Stereo/Multi-channel. That's the version I own, so while I obviously have no idea if the eBay disc is genuine, they DO exit. It came in an SACD sleeve yet still had the CD-DA logo on the cover, just like the version on this site.

Here's a scan of (one of) my SACD in question....

Oops, so I was wrong I my description of number 2, thanks for pointing this out.

So it seems the one offered here is #2, not #3.

Still, really weird that the single-layer versions _both_ carry the CDDA logo while on the hybrid version they've bothered to 'correct' it and leave it out.

Well I no longer wonder how Sony botched the introduction of SACD, this single-layer SACD with a CD logo on it proves Sony has no idea what it is doing. I wonder how many people tried to play this in a CD player, especially if they bought it used where the outer disclaimer was removed? And the CD logo is SO BIG how could Sony have possibly missed it?

I am glad Sony co-invented SACD I just wish they had let someone else handle it's introduction?

Unfortunately, most people are idiots.

The original US SACD version was the single-layer stereo-only disc, packaged in a unique paper slipcase. See accompanying photo. One can plainly see that it's a SACD and labelled as such. Later on, when Sony released the multi-channel SACD version, they had switched to the plastic slipcase, like the one I posted in my previous post. Again, it does say "Super Audio CD" and also has the SACD logo. And if one remotely paid any attention at all, you would've noticed that the "Compact Disc" logos were replaced by the SACD logos molded into the tray. When the hybrid SACD version was finally introduced (outside of the US), there's that round sticker on the front.

My copy of Toto IV comes in a standard RBCD jewel case with just a miniscule sacd logo on the spine , front cover has no SACD logo but has a square gold sticker edged in black with the usual plays in CD and SACD message printed. It is however a 5.1 version. If that had not been present would have missed it totally as being an SACD. The disc was manufactured in Austria

antje330 writes, in response top my query:

Ich glaube mir ist da ein Fehler unterlaufen, die Scheibe ist wohl nur für SACD Player, danke für den Hinweis.

In other words, it appears to be the single-layer 5.1/stereo version after all.

I wasn't even aware there was a hybrid version. Anyone know if the SACD layer on it is any different than the single layer ones?

I -know- the Stereo program on the two single layer versions *ARE* different.

Amen to that.

I have the stereo/multi-channel with the plastic sleeve and it has the CD-DA logo on the inlay card, but I've never tried to play it in a CD player so I have no idea if it's hybrid or not.
