Thread: Miles Davis Porgy & Bess - Supply and Demand?

Trying to find Porgy & Bess on SACD is a very good example of supply not meeting demand with prices ranging from 70 Euro up across different resellers in different countries.
Why Columbia is not getting it's act together is a mistery. They are discounting ordinary CD's down to silly prices and not seing that the market is clearly segmented with demand for better audio.

What do you think? Do you find the same problems with your favourite music on SACD?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

It's not that simple. Just because a few people are willing to pay over $50 for a disc does not mean that there is a significant demand and a reason for reissuing it.

Why not order directly from Japan where it goes for a lot less. Sure shipping will be higher but you can probably find a few other discs you're after and spread the cost over these.

CDJapan is showing the 1999 SACD pressing of Miles Davis: Porgy and Bess for [US] $35.69. There doesn't appear to be a repressing from the Miles' SACDs released by SONY in 2007. Shipping is rather high, but CDJapan offers coupons and bonus points which can be applied to future orders [and at least, help defray shipping costs].And actually, this is a good time to order those titles from Japan as the yen is favorable compared to the American dollar. Similar SACDs can demand as much as $60 [US} from American vendors.

Yes Claude, but we are talking about Miles Davis and one of his most popular albums, hence a product with substantial awareness and demand in the long run. I have no idea what could be the "mimimum re-print" size for Columbia (3.000, 5.000, 10.000?) but demand is still there if the prices are that high. Plus with internet merchants dominating the sales of SACD you do not even have to "distribute" the product with its associated costs, just re-print. On the other hand the normal CD version is now on sales in my local record shop window for 5.90 Euro.
This is just and "simply" very bad marketing.
