Hello, I just wanted to mention that I am thrilled with this unit. I primarily purchased this for SACD and DVD-A Multi-Channel playback via the HDMI. Pure DSD straight out, not through PCM. Now I know what DSD SACD really really really should sound like. Discs I've played countless times are completely new to my ears. Joy! Sorry, no tech talk, just great, eye-opening performance. Thank you.

Will be interesting to see how this Oppo stacks up against the latest Sony sound wise. I'm definately loking for a new MC player and the Oppo seems to satisfy all my requirements.

Hello Patrick. Do you know if the analogue sound output is synchronised with the picture? I have read reports of this not being the case with a certain Panasonic machine. Nothing more irritating than out-of-synch sound! I'm interested in purchasing a blu-ray player for watching and listening to opera.

Patrick,

I have poked around here once or twice with this idea, but never got an answer that moved me to acquire an Oppo unit.

The question, predicated on the fact that the Oppo units transmit pure DSD via HDMI, is:

Are there any DSD DACs out there in a receiver or Pre-Processor that deliver the analog product - or must the DSD be converted to PCM in the receiver or Pre-Processor?

My Sony player has an option which forgoes all DSP so my speakers must be placed equidistant from the listening position, but using that option called "Multichannel Direct" employs the Sony's DSD to Analog converters to deliver a pure DSD experience. Is that available from an Oppo unit and HDMI, or are you still listening via a PCM conversion in your Denon Receiver?

Is there a decent selection now of Blu-Ray opera? What of other concert experiences?

Unitel recorded Julia Fischer on New Year's Day 2008 in a concert wherein she first appeared as violinist playing the Saint Saens Violin Concerto, then after intermission came out on stage, sat at the piano and proceeded to play the Grieg Piano Concerto. This made a brief appearance on the internet in a YouTube like presentation from Denmark or Sweden, and I can attest to the fact that it was one of those "OH Wow" events. If it were available as a Blu-Ray disc, my order for the BDP-83 would be immediate!

Hello, I'm listening to pure DSD Direct with the Denon. No PCM. Thanks.

There are a fair number of BR opera and ballet releases and, fwiw, they are coming faster these days than similar repertoire on SACD. OTOH, it is interesting that this month I received 2 Lohengrins, one on BR and the other on SACD. I really enjoy both of them but the sound/performance on the SACD (Bychkov) is, imho, superior.

I typed "blu ray opera" on Amazon's Classical Music section and got 56 results. Whilst this is very small, I think in time it might get reasonable, given that many more people will own a big telly than own a SACD player! The thought of opera on a big screen in high-res PCM surround sound is exciting. Too much to ask for it to be high-res DSD, but there.

Yes, the Oppo Bdp-83 will forgo all DSP processing to the analog outs if DSD mode is selected. Personally, I am a fan of HDMI output, even though DSD is converted to PCM in the process, either in the player or in the AVP. One reason is I think Audyssey in the AVR's DSP is a huge sonic advance, easily outweighing any possible impurities due to conversion. I am not convinced there is much compromise caused by conversion. Also, I believe the Dac's and analog output stages in most AVP's are superior to the Oppo, including balanced out unlike the Oppo. Balanced is better for the long interconnect runs to my satellite speakers.

Another thing DSP does besides distance correction is digital bass management, which I find superior to analog. So, DSP allows me to use non-equidistant speakers with smaller satellites and with room and speaker linearity due to Audyssey EQ. All tolled, that adds up to a huge advantage to me over pure analog. In fact, I have never heard better sound than I am getting now in Mch. Pure analog stereos I have heard costing hundreds of thousands more do not to me compete in terms of sonic realism.

Very interesting. Oppo is not a familiar brand here in the UK but I keep hearinG good things about this manufacturer. I am in the market for a new SACD player and a Blu-ray one, so should I consider this universal player? Does it deliver the goods in sonic terms?

Googling reveals the player will be priced at around £500 (once again the old trick, simply take away the $ and replace it with a £ and sod any attempt at currency conversion).
