Does anyone know when this was recorded? According to today's rendition of Wiki (cough):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvatore_Accardo
... he re-recorded them again in 1999 ... and assuming that is his latest rendition (and at 58 in 1999, surprisingly senior to be doing this sort of repertoire), ... it seems to me that a 1999 recording date makes it unlikely that this is actually a DSD recording (as stated on sa-cd.net) ... if this is the 1999 recording?!!
I have reviewed several of the Fonè sacds and they also kindly sent me their Silver Anniversary sampler, which contains a track by Accardo playing the Bach D minor Partita. Engineer Ricci mostly uses old Neumann valve mics, three of them on a single point stand (nearly all of their recordings are Stereo only - and a number of them are available as vinyl pressings). The recordings I reviewed were mostly very dry, and when played at higher volume levels the string sound became glassy and unpleasantly fatiguing. The same is true of the Accardo track just mentioned, which unusually is recorded in what sounds like a swimming bath, certainly a very reverberant acoustic. Acceptable at lower volume levels but not outstanding, to my ears. I didn't bother spending my cash buying any of the Accardo discs for this reason, and I have heard Accardo live several times and much admire his playing, so I was tempted. The Neumanns were said to be taken straight to DSD, so I suspect the distortion problems arose in the mics and or the preamps. Hope this helps, John
