Hi Everyone,

I posted a while back about an attempt we would make at putting our new record out in DSD...Well, I am very pleased to announce, we have done it....

The new Wheatus record, "Pop, Songs & Death Vol 1: The Lightning EP," is currently available for download at wheatus.com for free, or if you see fit you can donate to the cause.

Formats available are: MP3, WMA, Apple Lossless, FLAC (88.2, 24BIT) and of course, DSD_DISC (.dsf).

The record was recorded and mastered in our studio using Sonoma DSD...the DSD master integrity was kept intact the whole way through. PCM Masters were converted in Weiss Saracon and mastered for Redbook and FLAC in Pyramix. There are detailed instructions for download and DVD burning for you PS3 users at wheatus.com. For those using Korg, Sony, Phillips, or other DSD compatible players instructions will vary.

All the files are 100% DRM free.

Thanks for helping us out back in the Spring....your advice helped allow us to develop a system by which people interested in our music can deal with us directly, efficiently and receive Master quality DSD files with no fuss.

Many thanks,

That's pretty awesome Brendan. You deserve something for all the hard work. I hope something good comes to you from this.

Take care,
Bruce

I especially like the note: FLAC is for advanced users only, DSD is for audiophile maniacs ;-)

Do the instructions vary for playback on Sony SCD-XA5400ES player?

Thanks a lot Brendan!

We received an e-mail from someone who said they were able to play the files back on their Sony SCD-XA5400ES.....I will consult them on it and get back to you here. In the meantime if anyone has instructions on use with the Sony unit please chime in!

UPDATE: I reread the users e-mail and it seems that our burnt DSD_DISC DVD will simply play back on the Sony SCD-XA5400ES like any other disc.

Thanks again,

Please don't get angry. But you mastered it LOUD.I have analysed your mp3s with Adobe Audition, and they are LOUD.

No no...I'm not angry....I'm sorry if you are experiencing it that way....I mastered with no peaks above -.3 in Pyramix, which is actually decidedly low considering the records that are coming out these days. We actually went back to a softer limiter setting after a car test because it was almost as loud as some other contemporary rock CD's and we did not want that. What does your adobe measure the peaks at?

Also, which version are you using...just the MP3?....I am not above running you off a lower volume master if you tell me it's stopping you from enjoying it. It's no problem.

I will admit, the Sonoma mastering process was tricky....it seems that the Korg MR1 and the Playstation3 do not have the same headroom....So let me know which version you are using and I'll try to make it right for you.

Thanks,

Just a note here....This homegrown process is still obviously open to improvements and suggestions. We very much want all the feedback you can think up...please let us know if you think the process could be altered or improved...it's kind of a wheatus motto of sorts, everything can always be better.

Also, does anyone know if there is there anyone else doing this?...a dowloadable rock record in DSD for Playstation3? We'd love to start a society for the improvement of downloaded music...HA!

Is there any indication that the Tascam WILL play some other DSD file format...perhaps the .dff files?

If so let us know and we could add the file format for no extra charge.

This brings up a valid point....It seems to me that the DSD realm is in a sort of dispersed and fragmented state when it comes to file formats and standards. Any and all information regarding ease of use and compatibility would be greatly appreciated. I'd want nothing more than to give access to any and all full res formats for download.

Sorry,
you are right. Tascam plays only .dff

My mistake,

Roby

PS: Tnx a lot if you add the .dff
