This SACD is currently ranked #6 in Top Recommendations on this web site, but I find that the CD layer is compressed to the point of clipping. One can verify this easily by looking at a display of the signal with a program such as Audacity. As an extreme example, “The Barry Williams Show” is almost constantly at full scale. Does the SACD layer have the same characteristics?

I haven't been able to get my hands on this one but I have 3 other PG titles. PG 3 is especially hard and forward sounding. Definitely missing the vinyl magic.

I haven't listened to the cd layer to compare, but the sacd layer actually has a quite wide dynamic range. The Barry Williams Show is certainly compressed, but I think that was done intentionally in that case, given the nature of that particular song.

I hadn't been able to find it either but CD Universe is linked, shows it as shipping in 1-2 days and sells it for $44.29. I've ordered it and shipping was $2.99. Not my favorite kind of price to pay for an SACD but to get RNR MCH you do what you've got to do. I'm glad it has great sound (MCH) reviews.

Never played the CD layer until reading this thread. Yes it is different to my ears the Cd layer sounds "congested" the SACD layers are although heavily electronic and artificial are again in my opinion wider in response but like goodward says there is a definite hard and forward sound which is peverse I know like everthing else this is just my subjective view on my player in my living room. Others will have no doubt a very different listening experience

It would not be the only hybrid SACD with a rather compressed CD layer. Depeche Mode: Playing the Angel comes to mind as an example.

If you click from this site to Amazon (US) they list 4 as brand new costing between $25 and $30 with the requisite $2.98 s/h.

The stereo track of this SACD is a DSD conversion of the RBCD version! (I think) Why do I say this? I played the SACD on my SACD player, converted the analog signal to 96/24 PCM with my E-MU Tracker, and analyzed the result with Audacity. Audacity shows that the "More Than This" track looks virtually identical to the RBCD track from the same disk (including almost constant full-scale signal (clipping/compression), and the frequency spectrum goes to zero at 21 kHz.

Admittedly, I am a tyro at performing such signal conversions, and perhaps I screwed it up. Can anyone verify my results?

I absolutely love the sonics on this disc, but admittedly I've only ever listened to the Multichannel DSD program. I Grieve is an absolute reference title with TONNES of dynamic range and a really great bass track that will give any sub a workout. Not to mention that it's just a gorgeous, beautiful song to begin with.

It's a shame to see the prices so high. I got this from Best Buy a couple of years ago for CDN$21.99
