This Fifth may be prettified, but I love it. Great recording too. Pure pleasure.

My copy arrived today and I concur. After reading a few less than glowing reviews after I ordered it ("just plays the notes", "nothing revelatory" etc.), I was a bit concerned, but I find it thrilling and intense. The brisker tempos add a lot of drive without robbing the work of its power. The recording quality is demonstration-worthy: weighty and detailed.

I too have this SACD and I have to say I love it!!!! I have a few minor quibbles but they are not deal killers for me: the main one is that sometimes the horns are too submerged in the textures. The horns play fine...I just wish that they had had more prominence at times throughout. Overall, I find Maestro Stenz's tempi and interpretation to be just fine for me (I now own 18 recordings of Mahler's 5th)
I like this recording enough to try other Stenz/Mahler symphonies....I am one of those oddities who cannot get enough Mahler...
Highly recommended!!
