I imagine #5 is PD too, considering I have a Dover published score of it.

You might also be pleased to know that last Thursday I heard a scorchingly magnificent performance of NIELSEN'S 5th with the LSO under Sir Colin (now 82 and on amazing form), recorded live, and this, as well as the other 5 symphonies, will be released over the next two years. Brilliant.

I received the following response to my inquiry whether or not the Nielsen Symphonies will be released as SACDs:

"Dear Patrick,

Thanks for your e-mail.
It’s likely that we will release these as Hybrid SACD titles as we have been for recent LSO Live releases. We don’t yet have fixed release dates however but if you are already on the LSO Live mailing list (http://lso.co.uk/stayinformed/) then you will be informed once we have a fixed release date.

Best wishes,
Gavin
LSO Live"

Notwithstanding "Likely" not being the same as definitely, and a bit of a hedge, the news is promising.

In March of this year I e-mailed an LSO LIive representative about a Sibelius SACD box and received this reply:

-----------------
Hi,

Regarding the Brahms / Sibelius. We are looking to reissue the one remaining Sibelius album (Symphonies 5&6) on SACD at some point this year so they will be available as a box on CD or individually on SACD. When that happens I’ll send out a newsletter highlighting it so if you’re on the mailing list you’ll find out what the release date will be. We’ve not got immediate plans to reissue the Brahms however.

Best wishes,

Gavin

So, they are planning to release the Sibelius 5&6 as a single SACD, but the Brahms 1&2 will not be released on SACD.

Dear Cherubino,

I note that you quoted my earlier comment about Sir Colin Davis's magnificent performance of Nielsen’s 5th Symphony with the LSO in October 2009.

Sir Colin and the LSO have now given us Nielsen's 4th Symphony (6th and 9th of May this year). Andrew Clements of the Guardian described this performance as ‘an account of fabulous coherence’, while Ed Seckerson in the Independent referred to ‘a wonderfully raw, grizzled, elemental account of this lofty score’. Both these views are correct, but even by the LSO’s exalted standards, the performance I attended on the 6th May was at the furthest edges of virtuosity and dynamics, visceral and incandescent. Sir Colin was phenomenal. How does he do it?

LSO Live therefore has the Nielsen 4th and 5th in the can. There is now no reason to hold back this wonderful coupling from release. I won’t be waiting for the eventual boxed set. I’ll be buying the disc as soon as it appears, and I want it now.

As I have mentioned earlier, Sir Colin will be performing Symphony No.6 in May and June 2011 and (stretching into the 2011-2012 season) Symphony No.1 in October, completing the whole cycle in December 2011 with Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3. My seats are booked, and I have little doubt that this will be as superb a cycle as his magnificent Sibelius.

Certainly something to look forward to. Enjoy the concerts and post your impressions for us. If there wasn't so much water between us, I'd be there myself.

We intend to issue Sir Colin's Sibelius 5 & 6 early next year on SACD so all five single titles in the cycle will be available on SACD.

This, I will buy immediately.

However the box set had to be on CD I'm afraid. It's not just the cost of paying mechanical royalties - those boxes are actually very expensive to manufacture and with SACDs inside it would have been too expensive.

Whatever happened to this projected release of Sibelius 5 and 6 on SACD?

Thought I'd try once more to discover whether anyone has information on the Sibelius 5 and 6 from LSOLive. I emailed them a week ago and received no response.

I received an email from them today that confirmed they are working on the SACD of Sibelius 5 and 6 and will have it ready in a couple of months. Good news.
