would that this meant we will get Vänskä's symphonies in MC too! but i seem to recall reading elsewhere on the forum that this has already been ruled out by Bissie?

I'd love the rest of Opus 22!

what i'm thinking is if it was possible to make multichannel mixes of these pieces, might it not be possible to do so also for the symphonies?

if bissie reads this, perhaps he might be able to comment?

I seem to remember Bissie saying this was a new recording specially for an SACD, not the same ones that have been released three-four times.

The "press release" (from www.naxosdirect.se) accompanying this release states:

"The present recordings of The Swan of Tuonela, Lemminkäinen's Return and Finlandia are previously unreleased. Stereo versions of the original 5.0 surround sound recordings of the Karelia Suite, The Wood-Nymph, Spring Song, Valse triste and Scene with Cranes have appeared in the BIS Sibelius Complete Edition. For inclusion on this hybrid SACD they have been remixed."

BIS doesn't do faked multichannel discs, as far as I know. Most modern receivers can create a synthetic surround effect that is oddly and remarkably effective for sweetening old mono recordings.

No, we certainly don't. As the desciption says: the original 5.0 recordings (that's surround) were mixed down to stereo for the inclusion in the Sibelius Edition Boxes. On this SACD they come in their original glory.

I am thrilled to see Sibelius' tone poems on SACD. We seem to be buried in symphonies with near neglect of shorter and more colorful compositions. I say Bravo! I too would have loved all four of the Legends from the Kalevala, Op. 22 however the two chosen are the most popular of the four.

29 of the 49 Sibelius SACDs are of the Symphonies. And only a hand full have any of Sibelius' tone poems. To me Sibelius music IS tone poems, as he is one of the kings of the genre. The tone poems are the most Finnish in nature as they paint orchestral pictures of all the ancient legends.

I have purchased several tone poems from Vänskä, Lahti Symphony Orchestra on BIS from the same set "Sibelius Edition: Tone Poems" as 196kbps VBR MP3's from eMusic.com. They are different compositions: Night Ride and Sunrise, Bard, Oceanides and Tapiola.

The overemphasis on symphonies and concertos on SACD has been with all composers, not just Sibelius. I am always glad to see more colorful music making it's way to SACD.
