Anyone else have this problem? It worked when I first bought the player, but has recently stopped being able to recognize the SACD layer on a hybrid. It will play SACD only disks and it will play the RBCD layer on a hybrid. It also plays standard RBCDs fine. I bought this player used for $50 bucks about a year ago so it isn't really worth getting is repaired. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and if there is anyway to get it working again without an expensive repair. Maybe it's time to buy a new player for Christmas :) The Oppo Blu-ray player has certainly caught my eye! Thanks.

Hi Warmlion,

Oppo has a Special Edition, it looks good to me!

I believe Sony players will do a realignment if you power up with a disc in the tray (use a hybrid for hybrid realignment). Worth a try.

If your 595 player can't/doesn't realign, then.................

I would second Ray's suggestion about an Oppo, either the standard 83 or 83SE if you have the money.

There -is- a realignment procedure in the service menu; I have the service manual, I'll dig it up and look. (I can send it to you if you like.) I think the optical unit can be had for $25 on ebay; though after shipping it'll probably be close to that $50.

All that aside, you might want to try turning up the laser diode current if it -is- the optical unit. I know there are people who swear that laser diodes don't die like this or get "weak", but in the last 5 years I've been seeing it happen more and more... On everything from $30 to $3000 players. (Manufacturing processes? Who knows.)

There should be a small potentiometer on the optical unit that'll allow you to do this. (Distinguishing which one is 780nm/CD vs 650nm/DVD(SACD) may be the tough part.)

Might work, and worst case, you're where you started.

I already see this happen in the winter only due humidity in the Hybrid SACDs, that are more prone to this effect than the Single Layer SACDs, the SACD player was 100% OK.
Seeing your profile, as you live in Chicago a beautifull cold area near the lakes, positively a humid area, I guess your problem is not the SACD player.
Just a Idea...........Regards,

Thanks all for your suggestions. I tried a few things...nothing worked, but I guess it doesn't matter now as the BDP-83 arrived today!

So is Oppo BDP-83 frequency response limited to 20kHz (for analog outs)? Am I reading the specs correctly?

I think that the response of the 83 is not limited to 20kHz but that it only stays within the specified limits over that range. In fact, there is some evidence that the response rises significantly beyond 20kHz while the response of the SE remains flat.

It's strange they didn't give any info about its frequency response in 20kHz-50kHz range, 20Hz-20kHz looks like a CD player's response to me.
