After learning that this SACD had been dropped from MoFi's production, I chased it for months and months, back when Tower was still in business . . . finally decided to bite the bullet and paid about twice MSRP for it. Was it worth it? Sonic performance is not up there with the Pat Barber MoFi albums, but nevertheless it's great stuff, and certainly on par with other Davis SACD releases. But having heard the impressive Prestige 20 bit releases of "Workin" and "Cookin" I wonder if the 20 bit "Steamin'" would have sounded just as good? Most of the album is middle-of-the-road jazz, with one hard bop number, "Salt Peanuts", screaming in, almost inappropriately. Unless you're a collector, stay away from premium pricing for this one.

But a hearty rcommendation, before it, too, goes OOP is Pat Martino's EAST on MoFi SACD. It's a fantastic Prestige remaster. I just picked up a copy, sealed, for about $25 (incl. postage) from one of Amazon's vendors. Great music and wonderful sound.
