What's going on with this recording?
I've tested TWO discs(!) of it and with TWO SACD-systems(!) and there's always the same terrible, scratching noise from the tweeter of the right surround channel. It's only in the multichannel track of this disc.
So it isn't a problem of the player. I've never heard such like this with any other SACD recording.

It's such a shame because it seems to be a good interpretation of the Symphonies, but it is'nt a pleasure to listen the multichannel track.
I'm so surprised 'cause the sound of all other SACD's from "LSO live" is so fantastic. Especially of LSO 0535 (Shostakovich, Symphony No.11)

Is there anyone who have the same problem with this record?

Just giving it a listen now... Turned the fronts off and turned my amp to full. Yes there is a crackle in the right surround channel, bad connection to a mic somewhere I guess. It's quiet enough to not be a major issue in my opinion. Shame nobody realised before they recorded the 7th a few days later...

If I may hijack your thread.... What do people think of the sonics on this disc. I found the sound rather dry, is this the Barbican sound I've heard people complain about?

Yes - it's the main reason I haven't bought any LSO Live SACDs despite their artistic merits.

The only other SACD performance by the London Symphony Orchestra I have is the Chandos RVW London Symphony which is stunning, goes to show how much difference venue makes I suppose.

I've had this SACD for a while, and I've withheld comment. The main reason was because I couldn't say anything positive about it. I found Sir Davis' BSO recordings of the same symphonies vastly superior in SOUND and PERFORMANCE! Now I am hoping that his old cycle will somehow be released as SACDs.

I shall shortly be selling my copy of this on Amazon marketplace whenever they activate the "Sell Yours Now" link on the site. (Shameless link to Amazon shop here: http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/customer-open-marketplace-items/A2D1FAT1MFE94C/ref=fb_comi_spgl/104-9873740-8592726 )

It's a shame I don't enjoy this recording because I was hoping for much more. And also because i actually had to order it from the LSO directly because my local Tower wasn't selling the SACD version of this (as well as the Davis Falstaff, which is not as boring, but yet somehow disconcertingly unidiomatic).

Sorry, I wish I had something more complimentary to say.

Like many contributors to this site, I have found the sound quality of LSO Live recordings to be most disappointing, and put the cause down to the 'difficult' Barbican acoustic.
However, the recent Chandos 'live' recording of Barber's 'Vanessa' is in a different class altogether. I contacted Chandos to find out whether it had, in fact, been made at the Barbican performance. They replied:

Subject: Re: Barber on SACD
Message: This was a mixture of live and a patch session the next day. There was some difference in acoustic between the days so some careful remixing was done afterwards back at Chandos.

If Chandos can obtain such an open and wide-ranging sound on their Barbican recording why can't LSO Live do the same; particularly as they are using some of the best recording engineers in the business?

dear a-g,
yes, I hear the same thing and yes, it' a real pain (especially as it affects both sessions) but not as much of a pain as the overall sound quality, which is poor, and, as Dutchman says, nowhere near the quality of my much loved vinyl set of Davis and the BSO. Had similar disappointment with the Brahms 3 and Serenade on LSO Live and resolved not to buy any more LSO live recordings. And yes, as other users have commented, I too love the sound that Chandos have been able to give the LSO, so it' not just the Barbican. Such a shame.

I think that Sir Davis' old BSO rendition of the 7th is a reference for sound and performance. I realize this is available as an SACD (coupled with the 5th) from Philips Japan. I would really be interested in acquiring this if it really improves on the sound quality. I just wish it weren't so expensive to us folks in the US.

Peter,
I have this disc, and it is of excellent sound quality. Due to the shipping expense from amazon.jp, it's best to get 2 or 3 discs as shipping cost is same. And unless you have to have quick, the cheaper shipping will get to you for a lost less than overnight courier. They use DHL, and should only take 10 days or so.
