Has anyone heard this set? I would be interested in buying, but I've been a bit wary of Hyperion's releases ever since they were coy about whether their multi-channel SACDs of the Rachmaninov concerti were in 5.1 (they now confirm on their site that they are 4.0).

The site just calls this 'multichannel', but I'd appreciate knowing before I buy.

I have this. Very nice, though listening to all the nocturnes in one hit is a bit much. It doesn't say how many channels the multichannel mix uses (and I can't tell as my player is stereo only). I can't see that it would make much difference, it's just a single piano after all.

Next up for Hewitt on SA-CD is the complete Bach Keyboard Concertos, recorded in Australia last month with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

dear akiralx, a bit of a mixed bag. Sound very good, - four channels and instrument positioned very nicely. Sound a little cooler than i had expected. Performances variable, - sometimes there's more Hewitt than there is Chopin and although I'm no Chopin expert, some unexpected notes here and there. Overall though, interesting and well worth hearing.

Hi Brenda,

Cf my discussion under Hewitt/Bach Concertos 2, re non-romantic approach to Bach; maybe same approach to Chopin?

I listened to the first four nocturnes last night for the first time (on my stereo SACD system) and found the sound distinctly odd - has anyone else had this impression? It reminded me of what Nimbus did with Shura Cherkassy - clangy and at the same time over reverberent. I'll listen to it on the MC system as well, but so far a disappointment sound wise.

I have a number of Hyperion SACD's, and this is the first time I've had an issue with the sound. This includes the set of Bach Keyboard Concertos, Vol. II, which doesn't sound this way - so it is not Hewitt.

I think the sound is very nice,it's different alltough. The Chopin Nocturnes and Bach Keyboard concertos were recorded on Fazioli pianos, whereas just about every other piano recording is likely to have been recorded on Steinway. These are to completely different sonic concepts, and the Fazioli may seem odd to you because, due to it's predominance, you hardly ever hear anything else than Steinway.

I'm good with the sound of the Bach - it is just the Chopin that is bothersome.

because its more distant ? Think it could breath a little more, but i think that's the playing, it seems slightly heavy, the music doesn't really flow imo.
