It looks like this sampler is the forerunner of 20 SA-CDs to be issued (very cheaply!) on the RPO's own label. I'm trying to obtain more information.

All of those tracks are from the old Tring label which was the RPOs house label in the early 90s.

If these are from the RPO/Tring series which indeed they seem to be, then I'd love to have them. I thought the CDs sounded great. There was such a warm and fuzzy quality on many of them.

If they are from the RPO's new label though, then they're not worth being released on mp3, let alone SACD. At least one of the RPO's new releases sounds so horrible you'd think it was recorded by me with my old MiniDisc recorder in an acoustically-challenged studio. I got one of the new series, and never bothered to investigate the rest because it was so poor.

I am sure that all these are the Tring recordings.
I have all of them on RBCD as I found them a couple of years ago in a shop in Berlin at 1 Euro each! Since then they have re-appeared on other re-packagings.
They were recorded in what is described as '20Bit Digital Recording and Mastering via 32 Bit Digital Sound Processing Technology, England'. The series began in September 1993 and it was intended to be a collection of 150 albums. I have only managed to locate about 100.
There are some truly excellent performances, for example the Mackerras Shostakovich 5th, Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique and Strauss Tone Poems and only a few duds.
The Handley Rachmaninov 2nd Symphony is still my favourite recording (I also have Ashkenazy, Previn,Jansons and Fischer!)
Most are recorded at CTS Studios, London. From my web searches this seems to be Watford Town Hall(?). Take a look at http://www.cts-lansdowne.co.uk/cts/about.asp
One or two are recorded at the EMI Abbey Road.
I can't wait to hear them in SACD!

I wonder if they were originally recorded in surround, or, more likely, have just been remastered that way. No matter, at these prices I'll be happy to check out a few anyway!
Cheers

I think that at the time these recordings were made, CTS used a location known as CTS Wembley. They later had to move elsewhere after their studio was forced to close along with the stadium redevelopment. CTS then moved to the "Colosseum" for their large classical works and most large scale film scores. I much preferred the Wembley sound though.

Thanks for this information Dinko. I was puzzled about the location of CTS studios as only the Mahler 5 recording states that it was recorded at Watford Town Hall.

Well, I'm still no wiser where these come from. I asked the RPO and these SA-CDs were news to them. Does anybody know who owns the Tring catalogue now?

Post by Dinko February 15, 2005 (10 of 22)
It's been through so many hands...

The last I heard of it, the catalog was on "Planet Media"/classical.com . That was in 2000 or so. I got a couple of discs from that version then.

http://www.membran.net/eng/rpo.htm

Membran seems to have the catalog now. But Membran also produce what would be considered bootlegs in a number of regions, so it makes you wonder.
