Discussion: Mahler: Symphony No. 4 - Gergiev

Got this yesterday--- I think it's my 16th Mahler 4. Perhaps I need rehab.

Very interesting, well recorded. It doesn't come anywhere near Fischer on Channel Classics, but what does? Right now I would personally rank my favorite Mahler 4's: Fischer (way on top), Szell, Gielen, Gergiev, Boulez, Horenstein, Kletzki. As with all Mahler symphonies, I have many others I go to from time to time.

I think I've said it before, but while Gergiev's wouldn't be my one and only, I would not want to be without it. If you only want one, go with Fischer. If you want a change of pace, I found Gergiev's quite enjoyable.

Why don't you write a review for this site? As one with lot's of Mahler 4's, your expanded comments would be most welcome.

Some of you write so well, and with such an informed background! I suppose I'm more relaxed in the informal posts. Funny---- I don't mind writing Amazon reviews at all. Perhaps I will eventually.

I have his Mahler 2 which I find beautifully recorded, and without a doubt having the most breathtaking finale of any Mahler 2 I've ever heard, but the whole thing didn't zing me enough to persue his others---especially at the price. I actually prefer the Blomstedt with the same orchestra. (gasp!)

I suppose I should try MTT's 4 one day, based on your recommendation. Our own Seth was the one that turned me on to Szell's.

This is awful recording of Mahler's Fourth Symphony (read my review).
But Fischer's recording (Channel) is much better: finale's heavenly feeling comes very close by outstanding multi-channel mix! I also recommend Claudio Abbado's (DG) and Yoel Levi's (Telarc) recordings. Any comments?

I went through the Mahler cycle a few months back and on the 4th, I listened to various SACDs (I think about 5-6 different recordings). The one on Channel Classics (Ivan Fischer) is indeed among the well conducted, well recorded pieces. The other one should be under Bamberger Symphony Orchestra. I think the performance is flawless.

Let's lobby PentaTone or Esoteric to remaster the Mengelberg recording.
