The whistling sound in my player is definitely electronic, not mechanical and therefore not dependent on rotation speed of the disc. It is a bit like the sound that comes from a cathode ray television, only louder and with variations in volume from time to time. It starts as soon as the player is switched on (with no disc inserted) and gets louder when the player switches to playing an inserted disc.

Come to mention it, I did get the whistling sound I think that you are talking about, but found that it was some sort of mains interaction with my valve power amplifier (Beard P100). I cured it by plugging the latter into a different mains socket to the Krell, and it was gone.

I tried that but the whistling sound persisted. Then I thought it might be a fault with my preamp (Carey SLP 50) or my N.E.W. power amp. But I plugged in 2 other players and did not get the whistling sound. The whistling sound can be heard when the Krell is plugged into another amp also.

Quite frankly I find two makes to avoid despite good reviews are Krell & Oppo , see the latter are getting firmware problems(yet again) on the 95 this time see complaints on Audio Asylum Digital-SACD.

You're just going to have to provide a link for that. Also, what you perceive as "problems" with OPPO many others view as a company willing to provide continuing support for a top quality product. I don't see that with other companies.

Well, DB thinks that a problem with one unit is a problem with all of them. Yet, he's perfectly willing to ignore the issues he's had with his own purchased units like his beloved Sony receiver.

The problem with the Sony receivers is entirely different to the ongoing problems with Oppo software upgrades

Yes, but Sony doesn't do anything to answer the problems they have with their products. In their minds, a finished product is just that regardless of the fact problems keep popping up with their product line. OPPO, on the other hand, feels that their customer is the most important part of their ongoing effort to make sure their product succeeds.

Of course the issue with your Sony receiver was different. It was yours, and so it doesn't count.

I assume that your vast and deep knowledge of Oppo software issues is the basis of your statements. Ha Ha Ha

But this thread is not about Oppo, so you should have just left it out period!!
And as for Krell, well, they have redesigned their players. Of course that doesn't help Osbert any with his present issues.
