Both Amazon.com and CD Universe are showing a release date of June 8, 2010 for this Britten collection, which will be the first multichannel SA-CD from Reference Recordings. Reviews of the RBCD version have been almost universally glowing, and this is definitely on my Wish List.

By the way, to save time for anyone who's wondering whether SA-CDs from Reference Recordings will be derived from DSD masters, allow me to point out this statement on RR's website: "We record two-channel masters at 176.4 kHz, 24-bits, and discrete five-channel masters at 88.2 kHz, 24-bits for future release in high-resolution surround sound."

AVAILABILITY ALERT!

News flash for those interested in this disc: The Reference Recordings website is showing this SA-CD as available to order now. I called RR and was told that this is NOT a pre-order situation (as would be the case with Amazon or CD Universe at this time) -- the disc is shipping now if ordered directly from RR. (It would have been available even sooner, but the shipment of discs from the German manufacturer was delayed by the flight restrictions resulting from the Icelandic volcano eruption.)

I noticed during the on-line ordering process that information on shipping options was presented, but there was no field for actually selecting one of the options. The RR representative said all shipments are via USPS First Class Mail at no additional charge. My order is in, with confirmation e-mail received!

Thanks for your info. Just placed my order directly with Reference Recordings and to make the pot sweeter, they are offering a 15% discount + free shipping/handling within the US for an order or 3 or more discs until May 24th. And supporting RR may encourage them to release more of their wonderful recordings in the SACD format.

Thanks--I just ordered mine!

Edit: Yikes, I think I ordered the RBCD version (*shudders*)! I e-mailed them to make sure I was receiving the SACD version.

I ordered from the website too. Figure give the label a little extra cash and let them know I want more MC SACDs from them.

Mine arrived today (they called yesterday to resolve the SACD issue), and I must say it sounds great. They can give Telarc lessons in capturing the sound of a bass drum! Lots of depth and detail, too. The performances are good but lack the venom of Previn, Hixcox, and Bedford, to name a few, and the Kansas City Symphony is hardly the Berlin/Vienna/New York/London Phil. Still, they play admirably.

Just received mine today from Reference Recording....and it's also HDCD encoded on the RB layer. My initial impression is that Professor Keith O. Johnson dropped off his master tapes at my house and the bass is wonderful. I have nothing to compare it with (performance~wise) but it is indeed a keeper. Keith O........keep them coming (in multi~channel) and please release some of your back catalog titles.

i wonder how the sinfonia da requiem compares with the runnicles telarc version?

Update: I heard this incredible SACD on my main system and it is a text book multi~channel recording. The performance is all one could ask for and Professor Keith O. Johnson's original multi~track analogue recording has been breathtakingly preserved on SACD. Front and rear bass is simply stunning and his use of the rear channels compliment and enhance the fronts with a tactile clarity which makes this particular recording a must in multi~channel. As future Reference Recordings SACDs become available, count me in as a steady customer. As the recording is available NOW from Reference Recordings directly, it might not be a bad idea to support them and encourage them to release more product in the SACD format (and hopefully in multi~channel).

Does it have a center channel? If it does, and you are able to isolate it, is it approximately the same level as the L&R channels? Thanks in advance....
