Hi. I'm new in to jazz and SACDs. I was wondering if this Sonny Rollins disc and Bill Evans Trio Sunday at the Village Vanguard are a two channel or multi channel mix.

I did some searching but was unable to find out definitively. Thanks.

Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus is neither, it is Mono.
Sonny Rollins: Way Out West is Stereo

Except for some Columbia 3-channel recordings (some of which have been reissued on multichannel SACD, with a center channel and fake rear channel sound), nearly all the stereo jazz recordings from the 50's and 60's have been mixed directly to 2-track, so it's impossible to do a multichannel remix.

There is one multichannel version of "Way out west" released by Fantasy (Hong Kong), but my guess is that the surround sound is just artificially processed from the stereo signal.

If you like jazz, Saxophone Colossus should be part of your library (along with a bunch of other Sonny Rollins).

Just try to avoid any SACDs from Fantasy Hong Kong.

I actually prefer a lot of the mono jazz albums to the very early stereo efforts. It isn't bad when there are two lead instruments ie sax and trumpet and you get one from either channel but things can be a bit unbalanced on quartets when you get sax out of one channel and everything else out of the other. A bit of a shock when the sax takes a break and you think you've gone deaf in one ear!
Saxophone Colossus sounds brilliant in mono. No messing, just great music. I also recommend Sound of Sonny which is almost as good but wasn't at all impressed with Tenor Madness which sounds just like CD to me.

I'm confused - is this being re-released? If so, same mastering, etc.?

This is the 2002 SACD (APJ 7079), mastered by Doug Sax.

The new SACD released this year (not yet listed on this site) is CPRJ 7079, mastered by Kevin Gray. It's part of the Analogue Productions Prestige Mono series.

I hope the new version will best the DCC gold version. It seemed the original Analogue SACD received a couple of less than glowing reviews compared to the SHM-SACD.
