No, it sounds troll-ish because it seems like you already made up your mind. It doesn't give the impression at all that you're seeking advice.

you quote from Wikipedia so it must be true, right?

Sorry I gave that impression. I'm actually far from convinced either way. I was very excited about SACD till I started reading about it on the web.

As for Wikipedia, that's just one example that echoes a lot of the stuff about SACD that is out there.

Luckily you can just listen and make up your own mind.

I wouldn't necessarily say the above statement was that much negative. Do you think that people listening to SACD and 24/176,4 recordings are looney?

In the 2007 study, it was SACD v. 44.1kHz/16 bit: "the Audio Engineering Society published the results of a year-long trial in which a range of subjects including professional recording engineers were asked to discern the difference between SACD and compact disc audio (44.1kHz/16 bit) under double blind test conditions." People still failed to hear the difference.

I can only advice you to start listening for yourself and make up your own mind rather than have others do it for you.

To me the point is moot. I listen to SACD because I like the sound coming off it. Why should I care whether it's 'better' or 'worse' than anything else? Would that knowledge contribute to my listening pleasure? I don't think so. Not to me anyway.

Personally I think that the differences between high rate PCM and DSD are ... minor... compared to the difference either DSD or 176.4/192 PCM vs 44.1/16.

In one of the studies cited by Wikipedia, the conclusion was that people who like one disc over another were responding not to whether it was SACD or Red Book CD, but to other factors such as the mix. Many CDs sound flat to me, but there are some -- for instance, several that Celibidache recorded with the Munich Philharmonic released by EMI Classics (e.g., the Bruckner No. 8 and Tchaikovsky No. 6) -- sound absolutely stunning to me even though it's just regular old CD.

Zeus, I'm just askin'. Obviously, you guys here at SA-CD are convinced. I guess what I want from this forum is 1) explanations as to why the studies are wrong and b) advice as to which SACD player to buy for under $700.

It doesn't matter what they heard in the 2004 study (DSD vs 24/176) or 2007 study (DSD vs 16/44k).

Do a search and you'll find the some tripe trotted out here at regular intervals ... and with no resolution. Good fodder for divisive forum debate though.

SA-CD is a music carrier, not something merely of academic interest. Nobody is forced to buy and listen to SA-CDs. You may like the way the format sounds (like many here) or you may not. It matters little.

To me it rather matters a lot. I love my music.
