At present, I firmly believe that physical 5" optical discs whether SACD, DVD~A, RBCD or BD~A, while at present are less expensive than downloaded media, is still the way to go.

Discussion?

Well this subject about disc longevity comes around every year.

It can easily be researched and you will find that the 25 - 50 years original estimated life has now improved with DVD type discs.
Ironic that this is longer than the machines that they play on!

Rumour had it that the guy who hyped magnetic tape for storage worked for IBM and had a vested interest in that commidity.?

The greatest dangers are reported to be from Shaki stone radiation. oops.

Both types of disc are subject to the same catestrophic failure by physical damage especially the top surface which with use is the most probably cause of failure by damage. This seems to be the only type of failing Ive had in many years and I then revert to the back up made at the same time as the original.Sometimes editing out the stuff I dont want.

Personally I favour downloads and PCM in genuine hirez as its also quickly and easily analysed if you are unsure you are getting fraudulent lower resolution than implied with the term SuperAudio.
Im afraid this happens more ofter than people and cheerleaders with failing high frequency sensitivity would care to admit.
Your belief in a physical entity is probably rooted in some personal psychological history. It doesnt come close to explaining what you do about the many many items ONLY available by download or created from other sources,ie vinyl analogue tape etc .
I also much prefer a Chandos 24/96 recording played back in that original recorded format and not manipulated in quality by secondary processing DSD.

Unless someone introduces a new format which will have higher resolution than SACD (128fs DSD downloads?), hybrid SACD will continue to be my preferred format for music.

Haven't heard the album yet, btw how does it compare sound-wise to Nat King Cole's Love is The Thing SACD for example, is it more analog sounding?

I do not have the Nat king Cole however, its better the LP, warm , crisp and detailed. I highly reccomend it.

The Tom Petty is a great sounding recording, as is his other BluRay disc - Mojo...

Nat King Cole is equally good but it's difficult to compare Lush Vocal Sound with a Rock Band...LOL

A Hanukkah or early Christmas present?

Hanukkah. Going to my son-in-law along with Guitar Crossroads 2010, both on Blu-ray.
