Surely this can't be the complete organ works? All the other "complete" surveys I've seen clock in at over 10 CDs!

Is anybody the wiser as to how BIS could make this claim?

This set would appear to be single layer SA-CDs. SA-CDs can hold up to 256 minutes each.

Thanks for this - I've always thought that single layer issues were a bad idea because it removes one of the key advantages of SACD over DVDA and that is backwards compatibility with your RBCD player. This is tempting but I'd personally prefer to pay a few Euros more to get this (to cover the extra number of discs) and have hybrid discs so that I could recommend this to the maximum number of my friends.

Well, you can buy the Brilliant Classics set (or two sets?) of the same recordings with 17 CDs. Maybe your friends just need to get a SA-CD player! This new set is priced very cheaply. I think it's a great idea. I have little use for hybrids other than occasionally ripping them for playback on my iPod.

I would agree that I virtually never use the RBCD layer of hybrids but to get others involved, I think it's easier to say you can buy the next generation of software without the need of an expensive upgrade to your system. This is particularly true for those who don't have surround yet (needs extra speakers & amp/receiver) but also for those who got into DVD early on may need to upgrade their amp/receiver as not all the early examples had the analogue 5.1 inputs (and none to the best of my knowledge had iLink etc).

I don't see why I should pay a price premium just because others haven't upgraded their systems.

You might not be able to if the SACDs stop coming altogether!

I have volume 8 of the BIS on RBCD (Clavierübung part 3). The liner notes say it was recorded in 1989 on a Sony PCM-F1. Anyone know what this implies, 18 bit 48 kHz, worse, better?

16bit, 44.1 maximum it looks like. Maybe it was just mastered on that? (he says hopefully)

I have this set on RBCD. It was recorded in stereo and, as others are also guessing, presumably at 16 bit/44.1 khz. To fit the entire set onto 5 discs, even just in two channels and SACD layer only surely involves just RBCD standard reproduction?? So (and I ask genuinely) what's the point?
