I found this thread on Google after searching the amazingly frustrating TOC error I have been getting lately with my SA8260.

This is the second straight Marantz unit I've owned -- and my last, I'll add -- that I have had trouble with. The first was an expensive DV9500 that exhibited similar disc read errors. It was "fixed" three times by Marantz (who, by the way, couldn't have been nicer in their attempt to satisfy me in my quest to fix the problems).

Now I am faced with this SA8260 TOC problem which drives me a little nuts. It is not reading SACDs or Redbooks CDs at random times. One time, I unplugged the unit and connected the power again and it read the discs. If I leave the unit ON for a time the problem seems to get worse. I am a little wary, quite frankly, of going through the repair process with Marantz all over again.

My question is: is it worth fixing or should I bite the bullet and buy an Oppo BDP-93? What is a fair asking price for this player if I sell it AS IS on eBay or Audiogon? I have the box, remote and manual.

Thanks in advance for your insights.

I understand your frustration as I have been there. However, I have learned to fix the problem(s) with the player.
The player has 2 issues. One is the TOC reading, which is corrected with the addition of a 1k resistor to the transport board. The part cost is about 5 cents. If the resistor has already been added and there are still troubles, then the transport/laser unit needs replacement. This part from Sony costs just over $200. This part can also be obtained from Taiwan for about half the cost.
If you are unable to do the above repairs yourself, perhaps you can find a local electronics technician to do what is needed. The cost will be lots less than if a Marantz Service Center does the repairs.
Email me and I can send you a file with all the instructions needed, including a couple pictures.
This will fix your player to "like new" condition. This condition may last a long long time, or it may last only a couple years if the laser goes again.

The new Oppo's seem to be reliable.

BTW, 8260's honestly advertised on Ebay as having the TOC problem don't fetch much, like maybe $50 or $75 at most. Afterall these have been on the market for nearly 10 years and are 6 years out of production.

I was hoping to get at least $150-$200. There seems to be a plethora of mods out there for this unit. I'm just tired of putting up with these problems. Two units in a row is quite enough for me. I'll email you privately.

Hi,

Im new here and don't have alot of experience with SACD players. I've had the Marantz SA8260 for a few years now. The problem I have is my player refuses to play any sacd discs, even hybrid. The problem initially occurred, only very briefly, a few months back and has worked perfectly since, at least, Up until a few days ago. It still plays regular CD's or CDR's perfectly, but refuses point blank to play anything SACD. It attempts to read the disc then comes up with an error message.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, tricolours.

Hello,
Well you can try cleaning the lens, as suggested, but what you have is the common design error inherent in many SA8260's. Read my above post to learn more. Send me an email and I will send you a file with everything you need to know about how to correct the problem. The problem is easily and cheaply corrected, but does require some technical know how. Alternatively you can send the player in to a Marantz Service Center and pay $200.
BTW, if your player still plays CD's and CDR's, the laser is likely okay.

Hello, Steven!
I've this player- SA8260F (from Japan). It has 2 issues:
1.It isn't reading SACDs or Redbooks CDs at random times.
2.The right channel in a multi-channel mode doesn't work.
The local technician has replaced a SACD lens ($200 Sony KHM-230AAA from Japan). But after a year the problem has again appeared. And now I want to make repair independently.
Please, send me a file with all instructions needed and electrical circuitry SA8260.
Best regards,
Alexandr.
