I've only listenned to this once and the only complaint that I have about this otherwise excellent recording is in the first movement of the Planets where the gong suddenly rings out and this sounds odd to me as I don't recall this being there on other recordings/hearing it live.

I'm being very somewhat tongue-in-cheek here. I miss the outrageous organ on Dutoit's recording, particularly the organ glissando which isn't all that apparent on this recording.

I have to say that the two extra suites make this a KILLER SACD...both are suites of music I had NO idea even existed...very enjoyable indeed...

As far as The Planets goes, I have finally found a recording that comes very very close to my uber beloved Dutoit/Montreal recording..the Dutoit-Montreal Planets is one of a small handful of recordings I have on RBCD that have yet to be dethroned by any other recording, either on RBCD or SACD (the others are Berlioz's Sym. Fantastique and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, both with Solti/CSO)...note I said close with the Davis as I too miss the more prominent organ on the Dutoit as well as a better trumpet section with the Montreal band...not to mention the fabulous sound (though showing some digital age) of the St Eustache venue.

Still, this is a recording that will definitely stay in my library as opposed to the other earlier offerings on SACD of The Planets that were sold a long time ago....

Cheers,

I could never part with the Susskind. He brings out the color and beauty of the piece.

My very new favorite is the Oehms multichannel version transcribed for organ and played magnificently by Hansjorg Albrecht. The bass is astounding and the interpretation beyond reproach.

Oh, I admit that an organ transcription of something like The Planets might be an interesting novelty (sort of like symphonies played on multiple pianos) but such recordings could/would never, at least for me, replace the real thing....

Cheers,

It's hardly a novelty...........it's almost revelatory. I own so many versions of the Planets including Davis' Holst Orchestral Works Vol. 2 and I was mighty taken by hearing it for the first time transcribed for Organ (and I am NOT a big fan of organ music).

FD: "Sacrilege!" ........ Phooey! If you were to listen to this at full volume in your 'unheated' residence in Japan the house would disintegrate........for sure. FD, I love how you pass judgment on things which you've NEVER tried.....sorta like putting salt on your food before tasting it.
