Excellent playing from the LSO. Audio suffers from flat Barbican Hall acoustic.

I agree, plus the level is absurdly low--maybe 6-9db below a typical SACD. Gergiev's vision is not nearly as searing and dramatic as I expected. Between this and his disappointing Shostakovich 11th, I'm losing faith in him as a a conductor.

It is released now, obviously since others have commented on it. Got it feb 3 2011, and it is a great sounding recording :-) I don't quite agree on the critical review given.

The sound per se is quite clear...the low recording level and lack of energy in the interpretation/performance bother me more.

Today, I received Zander's Telarc SACD. What a word of difference! The performance is far more gripping, and the sound is even better...far weightier and mastered at a decent level. It might lack some of the white-hot intensity of the Solti/Chicago RBCD on Decca, but it is a massive improvement over Gergiev.

Obviously no consensus here! I found the sound a bit opaque with a lack of clarity in the mid-bass down. Too bad, as the performance is vital, with a real point of view - a good piece of evidence to give lie to the view that Gergiev doesn't "get" Mahler.

Boulez will be my desert island disc of this, but like other Gergiev conducted Mahlers, I enjoyed it, and will like having it to turn to from time to time. If you must have only one---good luck. There are so many from which to choose. But if you have room for two or three--or more, like me, this is a solid performance to to learn from. I love his M7, and his M8 will rank near the top of my favorites. While it isn't the best, it's worth having as one of a few alternatives if you're a Mahler person. If that seems luke-warm, I really can recommend it--just not as a first choice.
