Fugue asked: who still makes a multi-channel dedicated SACD player (not a universal player like the Oppo) with analog outs?

NAD makes one.

When I googled where to buy the NAD M5 player I noticed a lot of disgruntled customers who complained about rampant quality control issues with the unit.

On the flip side, there were a few glowing reviews but longevity doesn't seem to be one of them.

Given the rate of technology change, why would anyone consider buying a
7 year old player (ie NAD M5), of anything?

I'm sure the Krell Cipher sounds nice, but at $12,000 it's a bit pricey for many of us. At least it has multi-channel outputs.

Nice sounding player but AFAIK have absolutely zero possibility for speaker setup in SACD mode. No delays, no bass management. So with five equidistant fullrange speakers you are good to go.

I've listened to the Unidisk and the Akkurate, but still prefer the Sony SCD XA 9000ES that I started this thread with.

In fact I also peter the NAD M5 and the Denon DVDA1XVA - all three have distance compensation for SACD in the DSD domain that the Linn lacks. (The NAD's implementation of it is inflexible though)

I'd be very surprised if the Unidisc or Akkurate could compare to the Oppo BDP 105 with it's latest DACs. They are close in stereo to the Chord Hugo - which is among the best stereo DSD I have heard.

Interestingly I have the choice of

putting a disk in the Sony SCD XA 9000ES

Putting a disc in the Oppo BDP 105

Streaming using an HD connected to the Oppo in stereo or surround

or Streaming into to the Chord Hugo in stereo from Mac mini.

For multi-channel SACD - I choose the Sony - it sounds more natural.
For Stereo I choose the Chord Hugo

The Oppo is at it's best playing Blu-Ray music or movies or course. Though it is more detailed than the Sony it is at the expense of musicality and timing is out in my no-equi-distant system.

But if I could only have one device of the three - it would be the Oppo!

But it converts DSD to PCM and it still doesn't have distance compensation!

For $12K

It has a fancy case I guess...

You are lucky that your Sony 9000ES is still working, sold mine to Nagraboy who told me it packed after a years use and was uneconomical to repair. As for any Oppo BD via HDMI very poor HF compared to Sony BDP-1000ES

Esoteric used to make M-Ch players--perhaps there are some used ones for sale out there. I sure love my Esoteric stereo player.

FYI,the Hugo does the same internally at 32/384 pcm but outputs the signal as DSD 64 or 128.
The strange thing for me is that both via HD 800 headphones and my ML electrostatic speakers, the end result is more realistic than with my Benchmark DAC2 HGC which uses the same configuration and chips as the pro Horus, and supposedly without any pcm conversion involved.
Very puzzling indeed.
But I have music both DSD and hi res pcm where I know how things sounded live, and Hugo sounds closer to both mic feed and live in those cases.
On the other hand I also have recordings where I prefer the Benchmark's more forgiving/warmer more "masking" output, because the recordings in those cases imho are overbright and not quite SOTA.
