This month's gramophone carries an interview with Murray Perahia in which he says that he's just starting out on a (commissioned) long term project of editing the Beethoven sonatas. He will be recording them as he finishes each new performing version, starting with a forthcoming Cd with the ASMF, cond by Perahia, of the Beethoven String Quartet op. 127 transcribed for string orch. and a coupling of Perahia's solo performance of the Sonata op. 101. As Sony have been releasing all his recent stuff on SACD, that seems to mean that we can now look forward, starting soon and to come over a number of years, to a complete SACD Beet. sonata cycle from one of the finest pianists on the planet.

Good news indeed. Now if Philips could just get Brendel back into the studio to do a third Schubert cycle ...

That is exciting news for he's is surely one of the greatest pianists currently performing. I'm still overwhelmed by his Goldberg Variations -- surely a "performance in a million", with wonderful SACD sound to match. I've ordered his most recent Bach recording (including the Italian Concerto and the 5th Brandenburg Concerto) through the local Sony centre but doesn't look like I shall get it before Christmas. Obviously disappointing. I've heard an extract fom the finale of the Brandenburg and it's up with the very best.
