From the sounds of it this release and the rest of the 5.1 classic rocks that are coming out at the same time are just ports from the DVD-Audios. Anyone know if that is true? I'm assuming if this is a port from the Perception box set it contains the 40th anniversary mixes which IMO are awesome. Pretty cool that The Doors are getting a release on SACD.

The consensus is that these are ports from the DVD-A catalog. Regarding this disc, it is the 40th anniversary remix. I have the Perception box set, so no need for the SACD (although it is cool there's one out).

Of all the Doors Perception Box 5.1 reissues, those expecting aggressive surround dynamics from their first album will be sorely disappointed. At high volumes the DVD~A sounds very good but for a real surround experience LA Woman is superior. And for those interested with DVD~A capable players, the Perception box (beautifully packaged with accompanying RBCDs {12 discs in all}) is a REAL bargain compared to a single $40+ 5.1 SACD. I paid $60 (US) for mine, brand NEW......that's $5 per disk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely! Truly one of the "most bang for your buck" productions.

Thanks for heads up.
Looks like this can still be had for around $60.
I've got a oppo 95, great sounding RBCD and DVD-A.

Agreed, I have no idea why someone would purchase the SHM-SACD which is surely of no better quality than the DVD-A, only the DVD-A has undergone fewer conversions. And of course, Perception includes all the albums (with Morrison).

The first Doors album was only recorded in four tracks, unlike the later albums. Quoth wikipedia: "A four track tape machine was used for recording using mostly three tracks, bass and drums on one, guitar and organ on another with Jim's voice on the third. The fourth track was used for overdubbing." Accordingly, a true 5.1 presentation isn't really possible.

Perhaps someone in Japan, for whom the disc is originally marketed to.

I don't think it is an SHM SACD. Just SACD. I plan on getting the perception box set and this SACD to do some comparison.

While I would "normally" agree with you, two things stand out. The Japanese market seems to have gone in a stereo~centric direction and the lower pricing (as opposed to the SHM~SACDs) seems to have a worldwide market target intent. I am also aware of your DVD~A adversity and would also tend to agree with Ubertrout's assessment that the DVD~A versions would go through less conversions to achieve its ultimate goal.

In the end it's the sound that matters and whether YOU personally are adverse to BD or DVD~A, MY ultimate goal is to achieve a great sounding product, whatever the pedigree and in this case, the Perception Box with its remastered RBCDs and 5.1 DVD~As of all the Jim Morrison Door's albums is one of the biggest bargains coming in at a paltry $4 more than a single stereo SHM~SACD.

Sorry, but approx. 3200 yen is the starting rate for higher end discs in Japan; always has been, so no, these releases are not aimed necessarily at a worldwide market. The 4500 yen cost is something only seen recently and is not the norm.
