Discussion: Handel: The Wind Instrument Sonatas - Brüggen, Asperen, Bylsma

This 1974 recording is famous for the sound of Frans Brüggen et alia, and therefore very desirable. It is amusing, however, to note that this "Complete Sonatas for Wind Instrument and Continuo" does not include the only Flute Sonata known to have been scribbled by Handel himself (HWV 379). It does include Recorder Sonatas by Handel, Violin Sonatas by Handel and some quite good music by person(s) unknown.

In two editions printed in 1630 and 1632, the London publisher John Walsh commited multiple frauds in the name of G.F. Handel. Admittedly, flutes and violins were interchangeable then, so selling Violin Sonatas as Flute Sonatas wasn't a shocking crime. But Mr Walsh also added value to his first edition by claiming to be the Amsterdam publisher, Jeanne Roger. The best-known works on this recording, "Halle" sonatas, are lovely music but definitely not by Handel. Perhaps Mr Walsh was himself a talented composer (but it is much more likely that he stole them from someone who was).
