The DR database website is fascinating. I downloaded their Mac software and checked a few of the "songs" in my iTunes and got the expected results. However, this software is limited to 44.1/16 recordings, so it isn't very relevant to SA-CD.net.

Yes, a DR of 13 is absolutely magnificent particular amidst today's recordings which are anywhere from 3dB to 6dB of DR.

Best figure I saw leafing through that site was 23 dB. The best classical disks I have have over 70 dB of DR.

Search an artist with long recording history (Sade, Madonna...) and sort by year...

Even if it worked with hi-rez material, you would still have to rip a SACD and convert it to PCM, which is a lot of work just to measure the dynamic range.

The DR value is interesting to compare different masterings of the same album, but taken alone it's not very meaningful, as the dynamics depends on the music. There is no point in looking for recordings with the highest DR value and expect them to be the best sounding.

Does give some indication about the background noise levels, though.

There is no description of how the TT DR software works, but I suppose the derived DR value should be a function of the time window over which the signal level is averaged. For a given recording a longer window should give a smaller DR value. Since the window is not adjustable within the software, comparisons of different masterings should be valid even though the duration of the window is unknown.

Well, now I bought the SACD and had difficulty removing the seal. You know, the plastic piece of sticky tape along one edge of the disk pack. I finally got it off, but now there is a sticky residue. I tried Goo-Gone once with another disk pack and totally ruined it. This is my second disk from Analogue Productions with this problem. I am annoyed.

Stock taking. If all the CDs on the rack have them, you can scan them in order without taking them off. Saves loads of time.
