A friend of mine brought his over recently and we spent three hours listening to it. It's a very good sounding player, I ordered one the next day.

Now that my 5400ES and Nuforce Oppo are broken in they still don't hold a candle to my Meridian 800 DVD~A player

Maybe they can't hold a candle but at least the Oppo can play SACD's.

Silly analogy. And the Meridian cannot play Blu~ray discs as well......my point is.....for the optimium in sound quality, the Meridian 800 is hands down great for DVD~A and all those newer 2 disc cd/dvds that are too cheap to include 96/24 MLP instead opting for DD and DTS.........

For the money, the OPPOs are great swiss army knives but do not delude yourself into believing they are state of the art in RBCD, SACD (stereo or multichannel) or DVD~A playback........as BD players, however, they are pretty amazing.

It's silly to compare two players who handle different formats.
Another silly thing is to compare a 10000 dollar player with a 1000 dollar player. The oppo is relatively better for that price.

Your first line is wise........why did you include that silly second line? In fact, the BDP~93 for $499 is a better buy than the BDP~95 @ $999 if you just want to use it HDMI out. I have four Oppos and will never knock them for their universality.........but I've been in the high end "game" for years and none of the hardware manufacturers are giving 'superior' technology away for peanuts............probably one of the best bargains today are flat screen TVs which offer superior images to what was available 10 years ago for 10x the price.

My point is that if a 10000 dollar player isn't better, then the manufacturer is a crook. So your statement 'don't hold a candle to my Meridian 800 DVD~A player' is just stating the obvious and is therefore meaningless.

And I wish that the inverse was true as applied to Flat Screen Technology.........that the sheer musicality of a $10K player would actually be improved upon in a $1K player after all these years of rapid~fire technology (think Computers and mobile devices).

Esacede, at one time Accuphase manufactured a $28K SACD/RBCD player that was panned and in the review of the Meridian 800 (at the time $10K), the reviewer stated that the 10K Meridian played RBCD better than the $28K Accuphase Player played SACD. That was an eye (and ear) opener for me which means that one does not always have to go for the gold and in some cases, if they do, they will get burnt!

Even better would be a SACD player with audio output muted.

I can not understand why anybody would make a stereo only SACD player. HDMI out is not the point, there should be at least MCH analog output. SACD is a 5 channel system. That is the the whole point.

Let me help you understand. Its going to sit discretely in a nice drawing room, with a fireplace, some paintings on the wall, and listened to whilst reading a book.

Not everyone wants their house to look like the inside of a tardis.

Rumours and conjecture. Not many Accuphase users post on forums as theyre home listening to their gear, not swapping cables and pre-amps to make it sound right,

Your correct that you dont have to buy gold to get good sound, but to imply that you won't is ridiculous.

SnaggS, I "snagged" that quote from Stereophile Reviewer Robert Harley (I don't recall the exact issue) but he had, in fact, reviewed the $28K Accuphase and the Meridian and that was HIS conclusion......NOT mine.
In fact, I was not even into SACD at that point.....only DVD~Audio which is why I was interested in the Meridian 800 review.

In fact, over the years there have been a lot of pricey duds among SACD players (the early Krells come to mind). Gorgeous architecture does not guarantee great sound but in this day and age of internet "awareness" not too many pricey "duds" escape adverse criticism.

And in reply to your above post (#48) regarding living in a tardis......there are some fabulous satellite speakers and subs which are architecturally stunning (orb audio and even Bowers & Wilkins comes to mind) which don't break the bank and can neatly solve the problems of integrating a 5.1 system in smallish spaces and almost appear invisible and sound downright stunning (I have the B&W LM~1 system in my bedroom). Problem solved....unless you're living in a closet with a boombox!
