I noticed that Volume 1: 10th symphony and Volume 2: Symphonies 5 & 9 of this cycle were never available as SACDs in their original releases. Those 2 volumes were available as DVD-Audio or Redbook CD. Are both these now included as SACDs in the box or are they, as one might suspect, the redbook versions smuggled into an otherwise complete SACD set?

All SACD's, all stereo/MCH, all hybrid :)

Thanks for the confirmation Polly Nomial. I pulled the trigger and ordered the set from Amazon.fr due to their relatively low pre-order price. Considering I own both the Kitajenko and Caetani sets more Shostakovich symphonies are the last thing I need. I'm a sucker for cheap boxed sets however. It would seem from reviews and my sampling of clips that Kofmann does not take the conventional approach to these works. The cycle, while not entirely successful may prove to have unforeseen musical rewards throughout. Now the wait for delivery from France to the States.

I'm in the same boat, as you say, a sucker for cheap boxed sets. I've heard the 10th on DVD-audio from the Kofman cycle, and it was pretty awful (limp playing, distant sound, slow scherzo with a bad edit at the end that added a bar or so). On the other hand, I've got the 14th on SA-CD and it is a much better performance and recording, good enough to make me curious about the rest.

Just got the set today; I haven't had the chance yet to listen through more than a few samples in SA surround. The 10th Symphony 2nd movement still has added measures at the end (four by my count, watching the score fly by) -- bad editing, I'm afraid! Casual listeners may not notice, but it drives me crazy when I hear it.

It's not the first time I've heard something like this --I remember an RBCD (on Supraphon?) of Maxim Shostakovich conducting the 5th and there was an additional measure or so added to the finale/coda.

I like the packaging (as described in another post above). The box takes up little space without the jewel cases, but still has all of the individual printed booklets. The disc envelopes are thin, but well protected by the sturdy outer box.

You're both right - terrible edit! Well actually, it's very good because you can't hear the edit but only the consequences... Not the top S10 then!
