Hi all, I am new to the site, and new also to SACD. I have 17 SACD'S so far, but I won't be getting many more...........the prices are insane. I fancied the Genesis box sets, until I saw the prices LOL one sets on Amazon is wait for it, £455, yes that not £4.55 or even £45.50.......its £455. I am sorry, but nobody in their right mind would surely pay that sort of money. I have, however picked up some nice recordings from £2.50 to £10.00 (far more reasonable eh ?).

Amazon marketplace prices are a law unto themselves, and seem to be quite arbitrary. Watch this:

If you are buying on the used market, you will have to be patient. I have found many good deals through the Amazon links available through this site; though they were classical titles.

Use the "My Wish List" set-up and regularly check the titles you are looking for. And, you could always ask a seller if they are willing to lower the price to make the sale.

Well this is what should be expected for out of print recordings. Surely you can't expect the prices to be near retail. People, if they want something, should be willing to pay what they can if they want it that badly.

The moral to the story is to buy it when it first comes out and that is when the prices are more reasonable especially with highly-valued items.

Unfortunately, coming late to the SACD party has its downside. Since you're obviously into pop/rock music (re: Genesis) most pop/rock multichannel titles (and stereo) were limited edition pressings and DO command big bucks today. And the current trend (at least in the states) is to re~release a lot of back titles in stereo and I don't know if you're aware of Universal/Japan's SHM~SACDs, but they are pricey $56 (each) stereo, only, single~layered SACDs which will ONLY play on an SACD player.

The Amazon (both UK and US) used and new 3rd party vendors are the hot ticket way to go but still those OOP (out of Print) SACD pop/rock titles ARE rare but using this website as a reference, keep checking because you will only find what you want if you keep checking back as you never know when a vendor who needs fast cash may sacrifice the occasional OOP SACD for easy money.

Welcome to SA~CD.net. in any event and best of luck. SACD is a great high resolution format!

I was also very late to the SACD/DVD-Audio scene, and like you, have found many of the titles I want, especially Pop/Rock, are far more than I'm willing to pay. As such, my collection is small and growing very slowly.

Like others have mentioned, I just keep checking and sometimes come across a title I want at a price I'm willing to pay.

I've also heard some have had good luck searching used bins at their local music shop (are there many of those left?).

Totally agree but it is also a problem trying to attract newcomers - like our friend who kicked off this thread - to our hobby if the entry price is seen as grossly counter intuitive.

It is one fears going the way of High-end Audio equipment where the ground-breaking technology now costs $100k at entry, moving it way beyond the realm of true audiophiles like you and me (and probably most on SA-CD.net) and into the domain of Sheiks, Oligarchs & Investment bankers... Maybe it's high time CDJapan offers a Buy 1 get 4 free SHM~SACDs in time for Christmas!

And BTW, hirefox, sheiks, oligarchs and investment bankers couldn't be bothered with "canned" music of any sort as they usually import superstars like Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Beyonce and Lady GaGa to perform LIVE at their soirees!

It's not only SACDs that are becoming rare and expensive. Many staples of the CD catalogue have disappeared too and are now only available from third party amazon sellers and the like. You can't buy the Vegh Quartet's Beethoven cycle new any more, for example, or most of Kenneth Gilbert's recordings. Prices are lower in some cases simply because there are more used copies in circulation, but the supply is limited. The erosion of the catalogue is currently obscured by the glut of shoebox-sized boxed sets that are being issued, but these tend to have a limited catalogue life and I wonder what will be left when the tide finally goes out.

The Vegh Beethoven cycle is a staple of the CD catalog? Not that I haven't heard of this cycle before, but it is similar to any other set that goes out of print. It will likely show up again at some point.
